If you live in the city you should commute. Take a bus, or train whatever is available for you. Or car pool with people you work with, or your friends. If its close enough to walk to or take a bike, then do so.

Public transportation to work is not an option for me as I work in a different city from where I live and have to travel to smaller surrounding cities to go to different homes. If I could take a bus or a bike at this point in time I probably would.

Coasting to lights you know are going to turn red. Fill up your gas tank when prices are low to full. Combine driving trips, like today I went to the grocery store and k-mart so I chose the location where the grocery store was right next to k-mart instead of 7 mi away from each other & only 2mi away from home KWIM? Don't carry things like strollers, bags of sand ect anything heavy to give you better fuel economy. Also walking to places if you can. Like I make 3 round trips to get my kids to and from school. So a few days a week I walk with a friend & fellow mom of another classmate wich equates to saving atleast 2 round trips to school a week. Or sometimes I'll park at school and walk the mile from there to the library and back when I have to pick up the kids since we live 2mi the opposite direction.

plan your errands and what you drive around for. make sure they are near by each other. also, walking if you can (if you live in a city) can help too.

I'm a little late on this one, but I was excited to see that other people are as interested in fuel economy as I am. Firstly..I drive 94 Saturn SL1 (a super compact old car) and it gets fantastic gas mileage. I am extremely lucky. Someone sent me a forward, and I just looked back and found it. There are some interesting ways to save money on your gas: # Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below the ground. The cooler the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer, gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening... your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the pseicfiic gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. # When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozel to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some of the liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tanks o you're getting less worth for your money. # One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL/HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. # Another reminder: if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up - most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. # Driving on hot days also helps reduce gasoline usage because the fuel vaporises better. Hope these help!
