Do you know your waist circumference?

I periodically measure my waist, to ensure that I am losing inches along with pounds. For me inches are certainly more important because I'm trying to look thin as well as be healthy. Before I began dieting I was not a fan of measuring my waist, though I did once and it was around 40-41 inches. That was depressing because that's about the same as my husband! I did not lose the inches quickly.. in fact in December after I'd lost about 30 pounds my waist was still about 39 inches. I've now dropped about 70 pounds, and the weight is coming off slower, but the inches seem to be coming off faster.. I guess that's because now I'm focusing more in core exercises and taking ab classes twice a week. I won't say what my waist curcumference is now.. but I will say I've lost an inch just this past month alone.. but I'm still not quite there. Do you know your waist curcumference? Have you ever measured your waist while losing weight? How many inches did you lose compaired to how many pounds you lost?

Measuring my waist was one thing that I stopped doing after it passed 28 inches! I guess that I should do it though. Am finally thinking about exercise to firm up my flabby belly. It is horrible. Literally a pouch of fat hanging down. any ideas of any exercised that I could do to help get rid of this? Would be so grateful to get some advice. I did buy some fat free desserts - about 60 - 8o calories in each pot. I think that it will help and will be my night time snack before bed and help with my cravings for fat. So thanks for that idea.

I have that same problem with the belly. I think mine is mostly from the pregnancies.. which yours probably is too. I think it's a bit of fat but also a lot of loose skin, which is why it hangs down like that. I've not yet found anything that really helps it, though I've heard that working on your ab muscles can help it look a little better. That's why I've been focusing on that a lot lately. My suggestion is work on some crunches. There are lots of variations to them. My favorite are what I call bicycle crunches. Here's a link that explains how to do a bicycle crunch: http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/exercises.asp?exercise=12 Another good exercise, especially for the lower tummy, is leg lifts. Lie down flat on the floor on your back, place your hands under your bum for support, and lift both legs at the same time straight up in the air. After a few of these your tummy should feel it! You could also look into pilates, there's lots of DVDs to do pilates at home. Those exercises focus on your core muscles (abs and back). Let me know how it works for you.

You're only as old as you feel! I know you can do these exercises. You may not be able to do a lot of them at first, but work your way up to doing a full set of each one. If you want to start slower, stand straight up with your arms raised out to the sides, then bend and twist touching your right foot with your left hand, stand and touch the left foot with your right hand. You can also do knee raises which will work your abs as well. Stand with your hands behind your head, lift your right knee, and try to bring your left elbow to the knee, then do it with the other side.

Thanks Kat. You must remember that I am over 30 years older than you - but I will try the exercises. Yes, I had nine pregnancies, counting my miscarriages. Lost 3 babies before the first son was born. I have saved the site and will download the info now. Blessings

The only time I've ever measured my waist was for the game at my baby shower where people had to guess the measurement of my waist! lol. I have no idea what it is now. I'm kind of afraid to look, because if it is near what it was for that game, I'd be pretty upset lol. I haven't taken any measurements but I wish I had when I started at the gym. My husband keeps telling me he can see a difference but I can't really see it yet. If I had measured proof I might feel better.

You should take it as a huge compliment that your hubby says he can see a difference. He sees you every day, it's hard to notice small changes when you see a person daily. BTW- With as much weight as I've lost, I still sometimes think I'm as big as I used to be. It really only hits me when I go back and look at old photos of myself from before I started the diet.

I don't think most people do, unless they're being fitted for an outfit of some sort. Not sure why the idea has ever popped into my head, it's just something I do every month or so to check on my progress.

I have no idea and I don't want to know! The sight of a scale scares me enough as it is.

Hi, katsmeow1213. No. I don't measure my waist circumference. I need to though. I think that I have an measuring tape here at home. I have always wanted to know what my waist size was. I, too like you, am trying to lose my mid section. It is very hard for me after giving birth, but I have managed to lose some extra baby fat from all over my body. You are a great size! Keep up the great work!

I don't actually know my waist circumference and I haven't measured my waist for a very long time. Of course, for me it has never really been my waist that has been an issue, I've always had a small waist when compared to the rest of my body. It is my hips that are the issue for me and I don't know the measurement on my hips right now, but I know that measurement is decreasing because I am getting to the point that all of my jeans and pants are falling off of my hips. That is awesome that you are losing so many inches now.
