Do you feel like its negative for younger listeners and maybe even mentally damaging? What are your views? I believe that much of the pop music of today is not appropriate for all audience and is also taking away the beauty of past music...like the beatles..music that had actual DEPTH and meaning to it. Lets go back to when music brought HOPE to people..:)This is my opinion at least.

Being 50 years old, I remember my parents saying the same thing about some of the music from my teenage years. Now, here I am pretty much saying the same thing about some of the new music teenagers listen to. I guess its like the cycle of life, but there will always be the songs which will be around for a long time to come, and the questionable music seems to be just a fad. Lets not forget, The Beatles weren't liked by everyone and back when they first appeared there were those people who didn't consider it music at all. When I was a teen, listening to great songs by the great crooners like Frank Sinatra or Perry Como was actually something for the peers to ridicule. Great music is great music and it comes in all different genres. As far as the songs of today lacking meaning and depth, alot of what I've been hearing is actually the artist expressing his/her views on life, society or simply the way they see things, but that's just my opinion.

I find bits and pieces of things to like in newer music. But I find a lot of things that I just don't "get". Lady Gaga would be one of those. lol I listen to older music a lot more often than newer music, but every once in a while something catches my attention.

Perhaps this is called generation gap. I think today's popular music is less impressive than in the past. I can mention a lot of the nice popular songs from the past, but I can't name a lot of good music today. I love China

Honestly, I am not comfortable listening with today's music because I find it very noisy without any message at all. I am more on the melody so I prefer the old good songs like those of Barry Manilow, America band, John Denver and the likes. I still prefer to listen to folk rock and country from old artists.

I don't know if it's just my age but 'pop' music now is just dreadful, but again I am sure that is what my parents thought about the kind of music I listened to. I just don't understand how a teenage kid can get a record deal singing about love etc when he/she has no understanding of the concept and, like you said, cannot give it any depth. It's so obvious that most of the artist out there are in the business for a quick buck rather than a prevailing career.

I think that music now-a-days are unique and it has a electro pop beat and most of the music no are designed for dancing because what is on demand now are music that can be played in the club and that has a good beat that everyone can dance to. I don't think that it has a negative impact to the listeners because its how you look at it and how you will use the music. It depends on how you will interpret the song even if it has a bad lyrics. ;p

I'm not so sure I agree with you Tman. Of course record companies need to make money, and if I owned a record label, 2 things will matter. 1) Will it sell? and 2) Will it have staying power? I may not like the song or the message it sends, but if that's what the audience wants to hear and its going to sell, it would be a busines decision. Think of it this way, my great great grandparents would be saying the same thing about alot of the songs that came out even in the 50's. I wonder what music will be like even 20 years from now.

Well nowadays probably due to the recession, artists and record companies are caring less and less about longevity or substance, they're just looking for a big hit. So you when you put this into perspective, it is not surprising that these record companies could care less about the messages in music, long as its catchy and people flock to it is all they and some of these artists themselves care about. They care nothing about quality.

hmm, welll I unno.. personally i dont listen to a whole lot of it. I'll mostly jus listen to what I like. Its funny actually because most of my music on my ipod consists of stuff most people would of never heard of so my friends are jus like "whaaaa are you listening to?? i'v never heard of this !"... lol but yeah, i like music that has meaning to it and emotion, the song has to have a purpose. I dont just listen to a song about random stuff.. :)
