Do you have savings?

Do you have a savings account? Anything collecting interest somewhere? Do you even have a piggy bank? I know a lot of people have actually gone through their savings with the economy highs and lows - mostly lows. If you don't have savings of any kind, do you have plans to change that?

The sad thing is that savings accounts in the US earn next to nothing. Yup we have some but also have invested in things.

I do have savings, but I'm afraid it's not much. You see I got into a financial trouble a few years back, and I'm still paying for my debts. But I'm still thankful because at least I still have savings. I just hope that when I finish paying my debts I will be able to save much more.

hi ambiepam, When I was a kid, I love setting aside some of my allowance and put it inside my piggy bank. My mom used to reward me money with some things I was doing at home that time. That is the reason why I was so industrious when I was a child.. My dream when I was a kid is to have a bike. In order for me to have one, I must save 500 pesos, that is what my mom told me. I save money for so many months until I got a 500 pesos. I was so happy and my piggy bank was so heavy. I gave it to mom and then she and dad bought a new bike for me. As I am growing up, I realized to save money not just because I want to buy something in the future. I save money for emergency purposes. Life is getting harder and harder as time goes by. I also notice that. Before, I cannot hear my parent's complaining about money, but now, they do so much complain. I become so tired that I start to become thrifty. Everytime, there will be projects that need large amount of money, I do not ask on them anymore. Instead, I use my own savings to answer those expenses. Mom taught that the university where I studied is very thrifty because I am not asking her so much money. Well, I just let her think that way so there is no need for her to worry on me about my allowance.

i don't have a savings account but i do have a piggy bank which doesn't look like a pig. i have planned to open a savings account when my piggy bank is full. it is so hard to save money these days because i don't have a job and i don't go to school anymore so my mom isn't giving me allowance anymore.

Hi Hun! My girls have savings accounts! When they get a cheque from a family member for their birthday that is where it goes. The interest isn't that great, but it's better then a kick in the a$$! LoL! My hubby and I don't have any savings accounts though ... by the time we pay the rent, bills, and get groceries every two weeks on pay day we are lucky if we have anything left. It sucks bigtime being broke all the time, but the main thing is that my kids are taken care of and the basics are met (food, shelter, etc) and they are so that has to be good enough!

Thanks hun! We also have College Funds for the girls going too! $100.00 out of EVERY Child Tax cheque (the 20th of every month) goes towards their College Funds! I really hope they do appreciate us putting all of the money family and friends have given them for birthdays into their bank accounts. BUT they won't even know their bank accounts exist until we feel they are mature and responsible enough to make a good decision on what to spend the money on. For example a down payment on a house, a vehicle to get to and from college, or something along those lines.

I would guess that my life has always been about saving something no matter how difficult my finances have been. I watched my grandparents struggling to get by in old age and thought at the time that it was hard enough being old and not so healthy without having money problems too. My parents grew up in poverty too and knew the value of saving their money where they could. They were a lot better in their old age and although they weren't rich, they didn't have debts or live in poverty. It seems in this day and age, that many people are not thinking about what may happen later in their life and those years will go by so quickly - I can attest to that! We can manage being poorer when we are young and healthy much better than when we are old and not to healthy. So at 60 I may not by very old just yet, but I wouldn't like to be still worrying about how I can pay my bills.. _Derek

Yes I do have a savings account but sadly had to keep dipping into it when money was tight being on benefits, so now I have a grand, luxurious total of .75ยข in it--I'm hoping to save again, but just never seem to be able to

We have a savings account mostly due to the fact that we prefer our tax refund is electronically deposited. I also want to keep it going because I can transfer funds to and from paypal and don't want to change it other than making it bigger..

No I do not have vast sums earning interest. What I do have is farm land that I cannot get into my name as yet. I also have a house on the farm where I used to live and in 3 years I will have paid for the house in which I am now living. If I get the land into my name before I die, then I will sell about 20 acres to a housing developer so I have money if I ever retire! Meantime, I only save to clear my credit card and then max it out again to travel. I am going to the U.K. in early June and then my sisters, daughter and myself are going to Rome- I have never been to Rome and this is so exciting for me. Plus the daughter and I want to spend a day in Paris. She has never been and we can travel by train under the English Channel to Paris. Not sure if we can swing that one yet!! I have some health problems and so I want to see and do what I can in this world before I depart from it. Blessings

I do have a savings account, but there is not very much money in there at all. I started my savings account when I worked at one of the local hospitals and they required that they pay people via direct deposit and my credit was very messed up at that time. That said, I had a final deposit after I quit the job and I have left that small amount of money in that account ever since then. Like I said, I know that it really isn't much but as long as there is something in there then I am never really broke.

I have a savings account (separate from my investment account), but it doesn't have much in it right now. AND I plan on spending it this summer on two vacations with my Mom. I know I need to rebuild it, but it's been tough paying the propane bill the last several months, plus all the other expected and unexpected bills. I guess I need to sell some more stuff...

At the moment I have no savings and my pension is very low, but I have learned to live without spending too much money, especially on things that are not necessary. I try to keep a little in reserve, so that is kind of saving too. I joined a Swiss gold company - for free - and when I can, I might use some of my online earnings for buying a little gold. It is better than money at the time being, more stabile than paper money..

I do, not much in it right now. Don't work and rely on what my husband gives me. Can't actually afford to work! My brother and sister in law are opening an acc't for my three year old which is sweet, something they can add to on b'days and Christmas along with my mom and sister. I'm thinking of opening an acc't for him @ the credit union - small - but if we open up this education account its tax free and think it accumulates more interest. Have to look into it. And my husband's side of the family can add to that one. I have about 1800 since we just got taxes and was thinking of starting a small Avon business. I have friends on the East Coast who buy from Avon who would buy from me. It be nice to create a little nest egg. If I ever wanted to leave my husband or if god forbid something happened to him it be nice to have a little money. The state doesn't really give you anything more then a food card - though I guess it varies from state to state. What about you Ambinator?

The day on got on disability I was extremely thankful. But I knew that saving anything would be impossible. All I have goes to bills, and even sometimes that is not enough. I'm just glad I have the internet, and places like mylot. They are how I buy Christmas or birthday presents.

I don't and I absolutely should have a savings account! My husband and I just use the checking account, but I've said for months that we need a savings account also, especially with our baby due next month. It's just one of those things that for some reason, we never seem to get around to it. We were saving change in a large glass bowl and we need to get back to doing that because it's amazing how fast change really does add up.

I have a saving account which I kept up to these days, but because I enrolled in the graduate school, some portion of the savings is being sacrificed. But I always believe that paying for higher learning is a good investment too so it did not matter to me if I spent that huge amount, it is with a good purpose.
