My almost 4 year old has been so cute these past couple of days. He was watching me use my Wii Fit the other night, and for the most part I only do some of the stregnth exercises.. I get all my cardio and other stuff at the gym. One of my favorites on the Wii Fit is the push up/side plank.
So yesterday my son starts doing push ups and side planks, and makes me count how many he does. Today while at the gym I made him show off his exercises to my friends, they thought he was adorable! He'll also pretend to lift immaginary weights.
Apparently I'm creating a little fitness enthusiast.. and I see nothing wrong with that!!
Do your kids like to do exercises?

My kids love the wii fit. My two year old is pretty good at it. He loves the running one. Although his sisters kind of ruined it for him. They showed him that all he had to do to make his guy run was to shake the remote. So now when he plays he sits on the couch and tells me "I running" lol. He will following along beside me too if I'm the one playing. I'm glad they are having fun on it and like to exercise.

The boys were fantastic at sports from they were small. #1 son excelled in tennis and #'s 2 & 3 at football and volleyball. all swim too. My husband was also a sportsman.
Me? Nah - played some netball and could swim long distance but nothing else.
The daughter took after me!
Dodged Sports all through school until she found out quite by accident that she could do high jump
she can swim but nothing else - not even tennis which is big social sport out here. Your son sounds fabulous. You must be so proud of him.
Oh, I started the ab exercises - the elbow to knees one and yes, did I feel it after a set. Will do it daily now

Awesome!
My oldest is a sports nut! He plays all kinds of sports and loves it. The younger ones not so much. They take after their dad, he's more into cars than sports. I still encourage it anyways, and they have the influence of their older brother who always wants them to play sports with him.
You know what's funny.. I finally bought a swimsuit that fits, so I went to the pool at my gym last weekend. I discovered I can't even swim a single lap without feeling tired! I mean, I can run 5 miles on a treadmill, do an hour cycling class, or any number of other aerobics, but I can't swim a single lap! This has encouraged me to go to the pool more frequently to work on that. I want to be able to swim laps non stop for at least half an hour.

You should get back into it, as you say, it's a great work out, and it's easy on the joints and bones which you need to be cautious of as you get older. I love that my gym offers water aerobics and it's mostly seniors that take it. I've been asking people about these classes because I'd like to take one just to change things up a bit, but I'm worried about being surrounded by seniors, lol! A young girl today told me that she takes them sometimes, and doesn't care that she's surrounded by old ladies, and she was like maybe 20 years old. I might try it sometime, like I said, to switch things up a bit.

You get on with us oldies on here so I am sure that you can fit into any age group and you will also get a laugh. A laugh is a good thing to get!
My problem is that I do not think of myself as old.
I am very fussy about my nails and streaks in my hair. Have just had a treatment to burn off the skin tags on my neck, downwards to br*asts and a bit further down too. I suppose that I do know that I am old but I like to be well groomed and prefer to spend money on my body than to buy new clothes! I even have my eyebrows waxed and coloured each month. I also have a manicure and pedicure each month (very cheap out here)
I suppose it is because I am working that i like to look good. I have 2 pairs of black pants that I wear to work and they are washed every other day! Then I wear an undershirt and a loose blouse/shirt to the office and high wedge sandals/shoes.
Anyway, going home now. Take care and keep it up.

My 4 yr old does like to exercise with me. I started on my journey to a healthier, fitter me about a year and a half ago. He was very enthusiastic at the beginning but then waned off. He is back again and I am so happy to have him join me!!! He was just diagnosed with asthma and I think the exercise is great for him. I love the video Tae Bo Kick by Billy Blanks. It's a kids exercise video and we do it together. He also does yoga and strength training with me. I don't go to a gym any more and rely mostly on my home treadmill, running around the neighborhood, and a library of home videos.
Now walmart has great 1.5 lb weights that are super cushy that I bought for him to use. He loves his own weights and if he hits himself with them accidentally in his vigor for exercise he doesn't hurt himself. I do often have to tell him to slow down. It's wonderful when kids want to mimic our good behaviors and lifestyles.

Cute! I don't normally involve my kids when I'm working out, mainly because I don't have the space, and also because I want to really get into it, which I can't do when the kids are being silly and goofy like they are.
But mostly I don't think kids need any sort of exercise regimine, they just need to be allowed to be kids! Go to playgrounds, run around with friends, things like that. That's all it takes for kids to stay healthy!

I do agree that's all kids need. Though if they want to be like mommy and exercise I think it's very valuable to encourage it. He by all means doesn't stay with me for a whole video but it's a great way we connect. When he gets bored he toddles off to be with his dad then he comes back and picks up his weights and starts posing or jumping or tumbling. His "exercise" is very unstructured. Now he does have a babysitter who does "structured exercise" with the kids and she actually rewards/punishes them for doing it correctly or incorrectly. I disagree with this and am in the process of finding a new sitter because I want my child to be able to play and use his imagination.

You have the right idea. I'd find a new sitter too.. I realize there's a large problem with childhood obesity and juvenile diabetes, but I think some people go overboard. My sister came to live with us for awhile when she was 10, and she was quite over weight. I did not force her to work out or anything like that. Instead I bought her a bicycle and a pair of roller blades. While staying with me she lost 30 pounds just by being active. Since going back to my mother's she's put on more weight. She's now 15 and weighs over 200 lbs.

I used to be like that too, loved stretching. Wish I loved it now, I could use more of it.

My kids are much bigger than this but they do work out regularly. The youngest is 17 and he is always outside pitching or throwing the ball. He also does quite a bit of running which helps out with the pitching. The older one is 19 and gets pulled into throwing ball with his brother. He is planning on joining the gym so that he can have a place to workout and take classes.
It is so cute when kids the age of your son workout and then show you their muscles. Oh to have the boys be little again.

I used to love exercising when I was a kid. I used to wake up ahead of my parents & go downstairs and exercise with the fitness programs that were on the tv. I loved it. I was a twig so I wasent trying to loose weight I just felt so much better after getting some energy out. My daughter is in kindergarten and in gym class they do exercises. She loves it. She comes home and wants me to do exercises with her. She is way better at them then I am. Today while she was at school I thought hmm I have nothing to do I'll exercise and teach my 2 1/2 year old son. He was game at first but then he got tired of it and didnt want me to exercise anymore so he got mad and was being difficult so I took a break to read him a story then got busy with other stuff and didnt finish exercising so I guess thats what I'll be doing later tonight.

katsmeow1213,
Your son seems to be quite exceptional here, where he could be interested in working out at such a tender age. Out of it, I am wondering if he could do well in dancing since he could be following physical co-ordinations.
As for my kids, they are basically quite hyperactive and with a group of friends playing whatever they can think of role playing games, hide and seek, climbing trees and many more. Sometimes, I do get involve with them and I can assure you that it can be physically demanding like their favorite Boys vs Girls soccer match. I will be with the team of 5 princesses against 9 gladiators.
So, it is just normal for them to play games on these game box consoles when they are not playing physical games. They just do not have the stomach or rather the energy for exercises.

You have been your kid's role model so it's great and fun to hear that at an early age, he's already doing his first steps into staying fit.
My younger brother is very playful and so that is how he keeps himself active. Just recently though he's been sedentary being so fond of computer games and DVDs

That's really cute! I think it's important that they have fun with exercising and learn that it can be something really fun to do early on so that they don't have so much trouble with it later in life!
I don't have children, but my 3 year old sister always liked to exercise with my mother and I. I think she was just barely walking the first time she tried to exercise with my mother and I. We were doing some dancing exercises and she was hobbling back and forth with us moving her arms and pretending to do it. We used to do DDR all the time, so we got her her own little dancing mat toy so that she could dance with us! It was the cutest little thing ever. xD

The Wii Fit is great as it shows exercise can be fun and like a game. My kids enjoy it too. They did a lot of sport at school when they were younger, but once kids leave school, they need to look for sports or something to do to stay fit.
