new bowel cancer screening urged (UK)

In the news today, a new screening test is being urged for bowel cancer in the UK. As I understand it, research suggests that this is simple and very effective for detection and removal of pre-cancerous growths, detecting cancer sooner, preventing it reaching the lower bowel and consequently reducing fatalities. There will of course be questions about the cost but, these should be offset to some extent by the costs involved in treating it in its advanced stages. Would you support the introduction of this screening and would you participate if eligible. If I was offered it as a routine screen, I would accept as I have done with current cancer screening. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8647103.stm

I couldn't watch that sort of thing. Its not so much a blood and guts thing, its the violence that would make me feel sick. I've watched the screens as people have had various procedures and, as long as they're not in pain, I find it quite fascinating.

ROFL! Well I saw a really bloody scene of Iraq peaceful protestors get shot in the head by their own cops on youtube yesterday. It shows everything. The comments mention that the US is not covering this news at all. I haven't heard about it at all except on you tube. As a Jew, I can say I'm sure Iraq won't do me any favors, but I think it's alarming they are killing their own people.

ya know, I had a colonoscopy a number of years ago, and I was not completely sedated, and, in fact - due to the problems I had after my surgery in 1998 - was actually talking, and watching the "action" on the monitor - I remember asking the nurse to move because I couldn't see. I wasn't feeling any pain, I was, in fact, able to come home and do stuff afterward - unlike a friend who has had several colonoscopies and is always knocked out even tho they promised it was only "twilight sedation."

I have escorted elderly patients when they've had colonoscopy. They have been partially sedated. They usually say that the anticipation was far worse than the procedure. Its strange but interesting watching your own insides on a monitor isnt it?

well, since I wasn't feeling anything, it was quite interesting - but then again, I can watch those emergency shows

I remember the consultant turning the screen round so I could see as he explained it all to me and his students.... I think, seeing severe infected bedsores makes your stomach strong enough to cope with seeing your own internal bits and pieces!!
