lights- ON or OFF?

Do you sleep with the lights on or off? Since I was a child I never liked the light on when I am asleep. It has to be pitch dark because it is easier for me to close my eyes in the dark and sleep off. Also once the day breaks and the sun rays come into the room I wake up. Goes to show I cannot combine light and sleep! What about you guys, does light affect your sleep? Do you sleep with the light on or off?

I sleep with the light off, but with a night light. If you have the room light on you're just going to keep waking up. That's torture, but if there's no light you're going to end up hurting yourself when you wake up confused in the middle of the night, and you have to pee really bad. You're going to be stumbling around in the dark, going crazy. So you need a little light to be able to find the door, and see where you are going.

Hi red hot pogo: Nice answer. I'd say I would not expected it but it's interesting. In my case I have no problem or accidents when I need to pee in the middle of the night, you just need to be careful but I think that it's probably a good caution you take. Thanks for your answer. Alvaro.

redhotpogo, i see where you are coming from. I do like the idea of a night light. A few times I have hit my leg against something when i get up to pee but it rarely happens. I guess like starsailover says we just need to be cautious even in the dark.

Although I have mostley slept with the light off, I think I have got to sleep with the bedroom light on a couple of times. Sometimes it gets bright early in the morning as the sun shines through the window like in the Summer but I have bee able to sleep still, though I do have a curtain up partly as well.

Yeah, does get bright early in the morning Summer time, even Spring.

I can see you love your sleep with or without lights! Nice one. It does get really bright in the summer early doesn't it?

hi tolted, I sleep more when the light is off, however there are times I can sleep with lights on. Well, that is case to case basis. For example, I am reading a book in the night and I feel sleepy, that will makes me sleep in an instant without bothering myself if light is on or off. I just notice that whenever I sleep with lights turn on, I cannot sleep longer because somehow, the light is distracting me. That is why I prefer to sleep with lights off. I can sleep soundly without lights. Beside, I am used to that because we were practicing a frugal living. It will increase our electricity bill if I allow lights to be on for the whole night. So, I think it is a matter of practicality also.

Hi Annierose, I hear you on falling asleep sometimes with the lights on, it happens to me sometimes. You are right about it been an issue of practicality and conserving energy and money. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Cloud31. That's a new one! Having a dim light so basically it is dark but there is still some light. Do you read to sleep, is that why you have a dim light?

In my case, I sleep with the dim lights on. I usually have a book near my bed. So if I don't get sleep, I just read the book till I doze off. Even if I am not in the mood to read, I still have the lights on. I dunno what the reason is, but i am more comfortable that way.

I used to do that as well, read myself to sleep. I still do it sometimes. Seems having a dim light has a cosy effect like someone else mentioned. thanks for your comment

Deep sleep or slumber necessarily must have pitch darkness...otherwise the sleeping pattern is disturbed and hinder sound rest.

Someone said here that a research has been done on sleeping pattern and darkness. Sleeping with light can be a disturbance for some people but some others do not mind.

Hi tolted! I don't like to have the lights on when I sleep. I can't sleep even with a small dim light on. I don't know, maybe because I am used to sleep the lights off since I was a child. And even if I was scared of the dark, I still slept with the lights off. My daughter needs to have a light on when she sleep. Even if I trained her to sleep the lights off. She can sleep without the lights but only when I am beside her. But while I am busy and she has to sleep early. She keeps the lights on. I think it's different for everyone and there is so many different reasons too for it. (^^,)

You are right that everyone is different when it comes to sleeping and how they go about it. I like that your daughter can adapt. thanks for your comment

whenever i sleep at the night time, usually the lights were kept off; and daytimes we never keep light on .. as the day lights are there ... and if sleep that time no one bothers about light,.. you may try to sleep with keep the light on also, depends upon the enviornments .... and capacity to pay the electric bills
@tolted (190)

I shall be keeping the lights off because I like a good night sleep and I do not want to pay extra on my electricity bill :)

I always turn the lights off because I can't sleep when it's too bright. I'm not claustrophobic, thank God so darkness (as long as not total pitch balck) doesn't really scare me.
@tolted (190)

Good to hear the darkness doesn't scare you. It doesn't scare me off as well. Most times I fall asleep right away anyway.

Hi tolted: When I was a kid and I was afraid, I sleep with the lights on, but that has passed away. Now I can say that for me, my sleeping time it's a whole pleasure and I have no worries. When I go to bed I just think in those things that make me smile or love and I also make plans so I have no need of turning on the light. On the opposite it's uncomfortable to me to sleep with the lights on. Thanks for the question. Alvaro.
@tolted (190)

I like your answer. When I sleep as well I shut out all my worries maybe because I know God will take care of them. I also get inspiration just when I am about to wake. Good to hear you are no longer afraid of the dark :)

Hi,tolted. When i was before 15,i could not get into sleep unless the light was on.At that time,i had some difficulty getting into sleep,and with a light on,i just felt easier to fall asleep.But now,i never need a light on when sleep.It seems that my sleep problem has solved.And i now can easily fall asleep no matter the light is on or off. Your problem maybe some psychological thing,i think you can get over it by changing your lifestyle,for many psychological things result from lifestyle.

Hi qinghui, thanks for your comment but seems you misinterpret what I said. I never said I had a problem with my sleeping because I don't. I do not consider sleeping without light a problem in fact I think it helps me sleep better. If you can sleep with a light that's good and glad to hear your sleep problem has been resolved.

i prefer dimmed light too. but since my rent house has no such thing so i choose lights off. but in any way, it is just a matter of choosing to turn it on or off, because when i set my mind to sleep, i will sleep in what ever condition it may be. :)
@tolted (190)

I like that you can sleep in what ever condition there is. that is a good trait and means you can adjust to any situation you find yourself.

Hi, I prefer sleeping with the lights off. Though it is not that totally dark since the light from the outside illuminates through my window and after several seconds it gives a good lighting inside my room. I am not that comfy with total darkness that i can't see a thing. the reflection from the outside just gives a cozy feeling that makes me sleep really well and not to sharp for my eyes.
@tolted (190)

Hmm kenchiprincess, cozy feeling you say, that sounds interesting, just a little light to help you sleep well. Come to think of it I think the street light comes into my room as well but I hardly notice it.

I sleep with lights off.I don't want the brightness shining on my face.it could easily distract me and wake me up.I value my sleep very much.I don't like having anything bright shining thru my face while I am asleep.
@tolted (190)

coco, i also value my sleep like you. i think i am a deep sleeper as well because sometimes i don't hear anything around me e.g my husband entering the room or it raining outside. i love my sleep :)

I prefer a very dim speck of light. Just incase if I need to get up I can always see my way around my room. My room isn't very big but it still isn't nice if you crash into your drawer or something else that'll hurt. I don't mind having lights -OFF- because sometimes you just really don't want to see light :P
@tolted (190)

That makes sense djhenerz96, having a dim light to see your way in the dark. Not cool hurting yourself when you need to get up in the dark

I prefer lights off, it's easier for me to sleep. It isn't here pitch dark because my home is very close to the boulevard and it's pretty light around. But when I'm tired I could sleep with lights on and while watching a TV show for example.
@tolted (190)

Hi WhoAHHH, I also sometimes fall asleep when watching TV but the room is usually dark anyway so the lights only come from the TV. I hope the noise doesn't disturb your sleep?

I like it very dark, no lights, we have great curtains that blockout a lot of light. I am able to sleep with a little light, I just prefer not to. I sleep so much better in a cool dark room, sometimes I wake up with migraines so it's better to have a pitch black room.
@tolted (190)

sorry to hear about you having migraines sometimes, i think blocking out the light helps to sleep well and hopefully reduce headaches.
