Hi, Only in case of consumer goods, demand almost always exceeds the supply. This is called overfull demand. Other things like furniture, cars etc may have an irregular demand characteristics. The best way to deal with such situation is to do a mixed business, that is, make consumer goods like toothbrush, toothpaste, snacks and other fast foods, cold drinks, notebooks, pens, pencils etc your primary sells product and then use some variable demand products like deodorants, books, gifts etc. One has to watch for the seasonal push in demand and seize the opportunity. But most of all, tell your friend to choose a business that he thinks he is interested in. If he is interested in books, let it be books. If its sports goods, it will be sports goods. One's personal interest and knowledge plays a vital role here. Thanks God bless you

zhouxi, Food line would be my first consideration. All of us need to eat everyday so there is your demand. Food glorious food, gourmet, fusion, fast food and many more, people will just be looking out for a place to eat and hang out. Then, health supplements is my next recommendation. Since the 80's with the improvements in education, standard of living and the proliferation of the internet, people are just more aware and self conscious nowadays. Every thing is about staying healthy, living healthily and longevity. All things being said, I feel that your friend will need to conduct a self acid test for answers. Questions that pertains to finances, market niche, statistical feasibility studies of your business and other factors of entrepreneurship. I hope that your friend would have all the above considerations in his/her business plans and that there will be one. People do not plan to fail but they always fail to plan, so be wise. Take care and have a nice holiday.

zhouxi, “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away” There's an old adage where it says: "Nothing ventured; Nothing gained" and in entrepreneurship you just have to look at things out of the well. So, come on out of your shell. I am sure you are not alone on concerns of viability and ROI. All business owners are, so just do the necessary homework and decide. Helen Keller once said: “Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature.”
