A few weeks ago, my computer got a virus, that's why I was not active on mylot. My virus protection, macafee would not scan beyond 8%, and Avast seemed to have dissapeared. What is the best free virus protection that you use? Not including avast, because it was gone when the virus struck. (BTW, my computer is ok now, I wiped the hard drive.)

Macafee made a mistake recently and they weren't able to scan the new viruses. This caused many computers worldwide to get hit by viruses.

so what you're saying, is that anyone with Macafee got a virus because some one hacked the server? or that the Macafee antivirus just stopped working because of a bug in a patch?

Hello Phantom ! No antivirus is infallible and an antivirus is not enough : you need also a firewall. I am satisfied with Avira free and Comodo firewall and... XF-Prot running from a Linux bootable Live CD (F-Prot is commercial under Windows but free for personal use under Linux) to scan my Windows disks and remove trojans and virus not seen by Avira. Have a nice day.

I got away from Windows and now use Ubuntu which seems to not have the virus problem that Windows has. It is a really good switch I found. I have been using Ubuntu for about 2 years now and would never go back. Ubuntu/Linux is a really secure OS so your don't have the Virus problem to begin with. Just thought I would share that. So if you are going to stay with Windows I would say you need the following Free Programs! Spybot Search & Destroy Adaware For anti virus I would go with an open source one because they are free. Also they have a really good community behind them in the Windows market. There is also a program made by Trend Micro House Call that I use to fix my friends Windows PC's that get infected. It works almost all the time. There is also programs that they sell. They are NOT CHEAP but worth the money. I use to have a server on my network that would handle the viruses and other things that would try to infect my computers on my network. Don't need to deal with that since I made the Switch to running Open Source Ubuntu on all of my computers. Linux also has a lot of things going for it... check out here if you are interested. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Antivirus
