I have talked about going to my mom's to visit her on mylot before. One of the things I take my mom to is a get together called "Great Courses." One of the more recent shows we saw was on Ancient Egypt - a subject I and my roommate are very interested in. We watch all the specials on the subject - some more than once. So, this course was being instructed by Bob Brier of the "Murder of King Tut" fame. Nnnnooowwww, when he came up with this theory, he didn't have the up to date information, and the course was videoed in like 2001-2, so he didn't have the new info. So, when he got to Tut, he had to go on about his pet theory. After that course - they are 30 minute video instructions and we do 2 a session - I had to get up there and tell the old folks that while he had this pet theory, it had since been proven wrong. Info in the last few years prove that Tut broke his leg and had malaria, so he wasn't murdered after all. Okay, cool, I'm getting up there and disputing one of the top men in the field, but I did know that what he was saying had since been disproved. And if I hadn't always been interested in ancient history, and Egypt, these old folks might've left thinking old Tut (actually he was very young when he died) was murdered. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tutankhamun Now, we get to the next course - Vikings. I'll concede that of all the ancient folks, I probably knew the least about the early history of Scandinavia - very interesting stuff actually... This guy was talking about the myths and stuff of the area. That they believe the world was created as a tree, that there are 4 branches, the one with Gods, the elf lands, the midlings (middle land), and the lower lands for other, lower creatures. At the same time, I was listening to a book in my car called "Summerland" http://www.amazon.com/Summerland-Michael-Chabon/dp/B000BBS9C4 that is actually strongly pulled from these Norse myths. With a big chunk of baseball thrown in for good measure. I was saying to myself **that sounds like the book I'm reading** over and over while listening to this course. And I was right too. Right now, we did the lectures 3 and 4 on Wednesday, now we are doing ancient China - I'm loving it! I actually started it myself since the staff person that came with the stuff didn't know how to do it and the person who does run the series had cataract surgery the day before. I had taken an survey course on the Far East in college many, MANY moons ago, and this was all new stuff for me, since its going into far more depth than my class did. So, do you sometimes find yourself having something happen that is like something else from a totally different angle? (I know about you and words Maggie...)

The first thought that came to my mind was WOW! I must have missed those other discussions about your visits to your mother. But I am really impressed that you got to refute someone who held an erroneous opinion about a historical character. I have always felt that if a person holds themselves up to be an expert on a subject he should keep up with the facts that are revealed on his subject. It is a given that as science advances we are able to learn new things about history.

well, these were recorded BEFORE the new information came in, so when he recorded the shows he was working with all the facts at hand - it was only in the 8 or 9 years since then that the new info became available.

not worth it, I'm sure he's trying to live down his "pet theory" now that the new info is in!

Oh, so this wasn't a live performance? I guess he didn't get to hear your masterful presentation either then. You should have taped it and sent it along to him.

well hey..zahi hawass will back you up on that. they still think he might have fallen from a chariot (hence the broken leg),but i'll say one thing-whoever was responsible for watching the king was probably in deep poop when/if he fell.but then,he was a teenager.probably couldn't tell them nothing then either.

Well there are my German letters giving a new slant, or more life, to the stuff I learned about the history of the period...
