I don't have a problem with seafood, I'm happy to say. But, my husband does. He can't eat shellfish, although he loves shrimp and will eat them, even though he has a reaction. Luckily, his reaction to shrimp is not nearly as bad as it is with other shellfish like crabs. He can eat crabs with only a minor reaction IF the crabs are freshly caught. If they've even been sitting around for a few hours, he has to take a strong antihistamine to counteract his reaction. His throat tightens, although it doesn't close altogether. I don't believe he's ever had to go to the hospital because of eating seafood. My son, now, is very allergic to fruit grown on trees. I know it sounds strange but he can eat berries, kiwis, any fruit that does not grow on trees. I'm sure there's a medical reason for it but I don't know what it is. He gets pretty bad when he eats these fruits and almost had to be rushed to the hospital once but, luckily, the antihistamines he took began to work just in time. His face swells up, as well as his throat and tongue. He's learned to just not try to eat apples, pears, cherries, etc. ever again. I'm only allergic to dust... or, perhaps I'm only allergic to dusting. No, really, I'm allergic to dust but I only sneeze and cough a little and sometimes my eyes and ears itch but that's all. Nothing to prevent me from cleaning the dust out of here.

thanks for sharing your thoughts mentalward. i do believe you when you said that your son had that kind of reaction to fruits from trees, because i once had a very weird allergy to citrus fruits, of all things! for a long while i couldn't eat a fresh orange, or a fresh lemon, or even have juice with citrus pulps in it. if i took it, my face would blow up and my mum said that i look like a 'ninja turtle'..!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - My sons adored the Ninja Turtles when they were little. They dressed up like them for Halloween once.
Which one?

i told her that if she insists that i look like that, then i want to change my name to Michaelangelo.. then i can have all the pizza i want and she has to put up with my constant 'cowabunga!' around the house. well, i should have stopped when i was ahead...because she made sure i had plain, 'safe to eat' oatmeal for a week... :(

I was asthmatic when I was young and seafood are definitely a big no no. I had the worst allergic reaction when I was 11 years old when my parents had to take me to the hospital in the middle of the night cause I cant breath anymore. I think my respiratory tract was dilated that's why it was difficult for the air to pass making it hard for me to breath. We also cant stay at home cause I am gonna die if I would have to stay at home.

oh no..pity you. i guess you're now staying far far away from any type of seafood huh? it's always dangerous when the allergies can cause problems to your breathing, throat, etc.. i can;t even imagine what it would be like! but how come you can't stay home? you must be the restless type of person..

I heard about somebody getting angioedema or the swelling inside the throat in such a way that it could make the patient have difficulty in breathing. In such patients, they give epinephrine

ow..that's scary, when the swelling constricts the throat and the person has difficulty breathing. i shudder to imagine going through something like that with no one around to help at that moment... thanks for the comment mimiang :)

I have never had an allergic reaction to any seafood, so I guess my worst experience would be none. Haha. I had a friend who had a serious reaction. Honestly the best thing to do is to see a doctor. Even though there are "online traditional treatments" do you seriously feel they can work better than what a doctor can do? They have been studying their field for years, while these "traditional methods" have no actually research to them to back them up. Besides a lot of traditional methods have a lot of nasty side effects. For example, I was doing a report on abortion, and came across a site that said,"Instead of going to a doctor do this to have an abortion." Then goes on to say insert anally vitiman c pills while drinking tons of vitiman c. Yes, I am sure that can cause an abortion, but I am also sure that it can make you sick and quite possibly die. I rather get an abortion done by a doctor who knows what he is doing, and knows all of the side effects.

yeah, some traditional and 'do-it-yourself' remedies can be quite nasty and have even nastier side effects. and ewww...vitamin C in high doses shoved into both ends? that's just asking for it... thanks for the post wicked. now i'm never gonna look at vitamin C the same way anymore...heheh
