Other than participate in Earth Hour to make our peaceful stand against what's happening to our environment today, is there anything else that we as members of the public can do? i wouldn't want to be too extreme or anything, but i'm sure there are many activities where citizens of the world can participate as one.
any suggestions?
thanks all!

Nice topic! :)
There are a lot actually. As an individual, I really ask the saleslady not to use plastic anymore for my purchases if not necessary at all or just combine my purchase with my other purchases and I don't fail to mention that the reason for me doing that is to save the environment. I would like to believe that through that gesture, I'm making other people realize about our responsibility towards the environment. Others would be recycling. I really feel guilty of throwing things which I know can still be used by other people. What I do is just bring these home and let my family find use for it.

you're right manubla :)
from what you're doing, you're proving that we ourselves have to start and do something, and others could follow. i'm sure that the saleslady has thought about why you want to reduce using plastic. and your family will also be thinking about what you're doing with your recycling efforts. congrats!

well i suppose we can help reconstruct mother nature by planting more trees... using biodegradable stuffs and by throwing our trash in proper receptacle. conserving energy and water too

yeah, you're right. but one thing significant about earth hour was that almost the whole world (well, most of the people from most of the major cities and some urban towns) all did it at the same time. it would be great if the same amount of people who switched off their lights, could also plant a tree each. i'm sure that could be quite a positive impact on the environment, and also make our governments stand up and notice the public's efforts :)

hi mario_stevens,
Yes,
we can do many more things other than earth hour.I we are concerned for our earth and we want to do something than just sleeping at night without Air Conditioner is also a way to save our earth as this cooling machines has CFC's which is destroying our ozone layer..another thing is through public awareness about global warming ..I mean that we can start awareness of global warming from our home itself by making our family members aware of it..

yup, you're right about the air conditioners and the CFC emissions coming out of it. even where some air cons have changed the gas it uses to a 'safer' version, it still can damage the air.
since a couple of months ago, i've made sure that the air cons in my house are only used during extreme hot spells. other than that, it's a nice ornament on the wall..
fans, good ventilation & airflow, and less heat absorbing stuff around the house does actually help quite a bit. and it gives a certain satisfaction too :)
