So, I went out to my mailbox this afternoon to collect my mail. Of course, what did I find but more bills. This really got me to thinking, what are your habits when it comes to paying your bills, do you pay them as they come in or do you have a specific schedule of which bills you pay each pay period? For us, my husband is paid on a weekly basis. So, with the first paycheck of the month I will pay car insurance, electric and water. The second paycheck I will pay the mortgage. With the third paycheck I will pay the debt management plan and with the fourth paycheck of the month I will pay the cable and gas in addition to my personal credit cards. The bills that aren't regular bills are paid as they come in and as we can afford them. Please share your bill paying habits here.

I don't do the bills - gasp! My husband does the bills . . . but I will say he (we) need to get more organized. We don't have any particular system . . . except that I stack the bills up as they come and he writes the checks for them. Often he will stuff these bills in the pocket of his lunch cooler thing for work - and he'll do them at work when he has a chance . . . that's pretty bad, eh? I think he basically does them as it comes . . . not right away, but at least before it's due! Eek!

In our family we have a very specific agreement. That is that my husband makes the money and I get to spend it. Sounds like it would be a lot of fun, but it also means that he doesn't deal with the bills at all which is sometimes depressing for me.

i hate when all bills are comming the same day... than i start to think that we are spending a lot of money for nothing! i start to think what i can cancel and etc. first paycheck - a rent. second paycheck - electricity. third paycheck- water. fourth paycheck - the car insurance and autopass. fifth paycheck - the internet and the phones... and as well as you the bills that are not regular bills are paid as they come in and as we can afford them.

One thing that I've learned over the last few years is that there was a time in our lives when we were spending a lot of money on things that we didn't need. Anymore we try not to spend a lot of money on things that aren't necessary.

Right now things are tough for us as we rely on o/t or our savings acct (if no o/t) to pay bills. Usually I take out a sum every 3 weeks for the mortgage, then the 4th goes to the car payment and I have to try to fit all the other bills somewhere in the middle. When I worked full time I paid everything as I got it but w/ only working pt I don't have that luxury anymore.

I really don't understand at times why men decide to do these kinds of things when it comes to the choices that they make with spending money. I was pretty mad at my husband at first when he decided to get his moped but I got over it pretty quickly because he didn't spend money that we didn't already have, we own it free and clear and it is saving him money in the long run when I think about the amount he is spending on gas for to and from work.

I think that our sitution would be completely different if I worked outside the house, but since we decided I would stay at home with our youngest when he was born I haven't had that luxury either.

Yep, that's pretty much how we do it too. First week is rent, second week is power, third week is cable, insurance, and phone, 4th week is cellphones and whatever else we've forgotten. We keep our bills to a bare minimum because we spend $200 a week on groceries, at least $100 a week on gas, and we like to have extra spending money each week as well.

It would be very nice if we were able to find a way to have more extra spending money in our budget, but for right now that isn't something that we really have. Of course there is still the money that Tom's parents owe us for the car that they are going to buy from us.

The reason we live the way we do is because it's important to us to have spending money. We could afford to have a house, but we live in a cheap trailer so that we can do fun things a couple times a month. We go out to eat frequently, we take the kids on field trips, we buy memberships to the community pool, I have my gym membership (forgot to mention that as a bill).. and in the summer we go to Seabreeze (water slide amusement park), and to our state fair... which is fricken huge! We can drop $400 there in a single day WITHOUT bringing the kids.. basically we spend like we have all the money in the world, but we live like we're dirt poor, lol... that's how we even it out.

As far as our house goes, we have a full house, but we choose to buy a house that needs a lot of work and isn't in the "in" part of town because it was what we were comfortable with financially. Yes, we could have easily spent three times the money on a house and were in fact preapproved for that, but we knew we wouldn't be able to have any extras if we had gone with that route.

I usually just line up the bills on the table, and glare at them from a distance. After a few minutes or ranting, raving, and maybe a little bit of crying as well, I try to get to work on figuring out what I could sacrifice next in order to pay these things off.

Wow that's a lot of bills. For me, my paycheck comes every 2 weeks. So for the first paycheck we prioritize electric bill and food. Second paycheck we'll pay the internet, water and some other miscellaneous expenses. For utility bills, we only pay for electricity and internet since we don't have a car yet, and the house where we live in is already owned. The monthly fees for our house is still being paid by my partner's family.

It is a lot of individual bills. However, I feel like the majority of them are small and festering bills as opposed to the huge bills that some people face.

Yes it sounds like a lot of individual bills actually. But we wil always find ways to catch up with our bills.

Well, I have been off work for over 3 months and so I am not able to pay them on a regular basis but when I was working, I paid them like you do. Now I just pay them when my husband and I get money to pay them, but I try to make sure that they are paid on time and everything.

Beyond everything I think that trying to make sure that they are always paid on time is the most important thing. The techniques that we use aren't quite so important.

In my case dora, i pay my bills immediately as and when they come. the only bill that i have to pay is for the piped gas which is bi-monthly, the electric bill which is monthly and the internet bill which i pay once in 6 months. My direct- to -home tv bill is paid once a year and my telephone and mobile bill. both get cut automatically from my bank account every month. Other bills like grocers etc are paid on the spot when i order the goods so that nothing is left unpaid.Since i am retired i have to pay from my savings.

We really don't have the option to pay bills on a cycle that is any different from monthly, but I wish that we did have that option. However, I'm not using credit for anything anymore and it really is a nice thing to have the habit of doing.

I set my internet banking, in January, to pay half the bills 2 days after one pay check and the other half two days after my other pay check, including a little bit here and there on my credit cards, and I take the extra cash and pay down things. With Appreciation.

That is a good plan. If our bank had that kind of a capability then I would do something like that but we use a small local bank and they don't have all of the capabilities that the larger banks have.

Yeah, as far as I am concerned, there always exist a lot of bills waiting for me,which I think i may have some pressure to take them. Though the bills are not so high as they are, but they usually come to me monthly, I need just go to the band to have them checked, which I think will have more burden on me.So I think how can I get rid of so much bills.

The only way that you can really get rid of bills is to pay them off and that is what my husband and I are working on right now. We don't want to be in debt any more.

thanks to internet banking, i get to pay bills as they come. for our home and car amortization and insurance though, i have set up automatic debit and scheduled payments so i dont have to worry about late payments. for credit cards always pay in full so that i dont have to spend on unnecessary interests.

I set all my bills to no-paper and to e-mail me when the balance gets updated. Then I immediately pay them so I don't forget. Just pay with credit card online and no writing checks. Simple.

My salary is only once a month but my husband's comes every 15th and 30th of the month. I receive more than my husband so all the bills which are big in amount I pay it when I receive my money. These bills are electricity, house rental, and loan bills. I am in charge for paying our nanny and also for the bulk of our groceries. With his salary it is being used for internet, water and telephone bills. Since we have a free gas we save into that aspect. He is also in charge for the school fees since it is not so large anyway. Oh you have just reminded me of the bills I'm going to pay. The electricity bill will definitely hike again.

I absolutely hate the fact that the utility companies think that they are able to raise their rates whenever they want to. This makes it really hard to keep a balanced budget.

I get paid every two weeks. I came up with a way to help me keep track of my bills, and which ones have been paid or still need to be paid. I got a planner that contains pages that show the entire month, and also contains pages that list each day individually to provide a space to make more detailed notes for each day. The first thing I did was go through the whole planner listing all of my paydays on the pages that show the entire month. Then I made a list of all my bills, including the amount (or estimated amount if the amount was not the same from month to month) and the due date for each bill. I then went through the planner and listed all of my bills on their due dates (also on the pages that show the entire month). In my last step, I looked through the planner and figured out what bills I had to pay out of each paycheck to make sure that all the bills were paid on time. I listed all the paydays, then under each payday, I listed all of the bills that needed to be paid with that particular check. I also included a blank line next to each bill, giving me a place to write "PAID" next to each bill when I pay it. I created this page on my computer (I used Microsoft WORD), and I saved the file so I could go back to it and edit it if I need to do so. I printed the page, and I keep it on my desk in my home office. On each payday, I get out my list to see what I need to pay, then I pay everything all at one sitting. I pay most of my bills online, either through company websites, or with the free bill-pay service provided by my bank, so I can usually pay everything within a couple of minutes. This page really helps me to keep track of everything, and I don't think I have had a late payment since I started using it. I just have to have the discipline to sit down when I get home on each payday and take care of this immediately so that I don't forget to do it. Perhaps this is something that could help you? You can do it with a regular calendar and a few pieces of paper. I use a planner for other things anyway, so I keep track of everything in my planner so that is it all in one place. I chose to do my list as a computer file so that I can go back and edit it quickly if I need to. It certainly helps me keep track of everything and get things paid on time.

I actually have a similar system that I set up some time ago with notebook paper. I keep all of the regular monthly bills written down and then when I am scheduling payments I write down the date, amount and confirmation numbers on my papers so that I have some solid proof that they were paid. Since I've been doing things this way I've never missed a payment.

hi dorannmwin I pay the few bills I have as soon as I get them as long as I have enough in my checking account to pay each bill. that way its paid, over and done with, and what is left I may be able to do a little pleasure shopping with as long as there is an excursion going shopping on wednesdays. otherwise I ask my friend nelda to take me to the rite aide to get some things I need. but my bills are paid first.

It is important to make sure that the bills are paid. The reason that I do it the way that I do is because I need to assure that there is room each week in our budget to buy food as well as pay the bills and it seems that the bills all come in at the same time in the month.

Right now, we are behind on our bills. So, we don't usually pay them until the cutoff date. Like today, our Electric is due, and it will be shut off today, if we don't pay it. I don't like it, but that's the way it has to be right now.

I have it arranged where i give a little to all each week or daily so I reduce my interest since it takes 24 hour to recalculate my interest. I just make sure I pay it by the due date. It works pretty good for the most part. It was hard at first but i saved a bundle on my car loan alone. I learned this from that method that was going around but was charging to do it.

That is a good way to go about it. We have our old credit cards on a fixed plan which has helped us tremendously. This time last year we were really struggling with our bills (I even had to ask my mother to help us out). However, since we enrolled in the DMP we haven't struggled too much at all.
