What are some ways to keep the house cool without air conditioning.. I know if you darken the windows that will cool it? Do you think keeping the hot air out by keeping windows closed helps?

we have all the windows tinted but even then in south west florida we need air, if we leave the windows open because of the constant ocean breezes the home gets covered with dust, sand, and florida's nasty little insects, and we have the ones that get thru screens and love dining on you when your not looking.we do leave the windows open from september thru march when the little beasties arent around.

I was down to Florida once and it seems I remember how friendly the crawling creatures were; a bit too friendly with the bite. I don't know that I would make it down there. Florida does get pretty hot. . I was surprised, however, to hear that Florida had snow down there.

we down here in s.w.florida didnt see the snow but the airports closed do to the frost on the wings, i lost 4 fruit trees, and several palms do to the cold this past year, not to mention the freeze killed many fish that floated up on shore making an awful smell. so much for global warming in florida.

Fans are lifesavers but they should only be used when you're in the room, otherwise you're just using power for no reason because fans cool you and not really the room. We just got a really awesome fan that has a thermostat that can be programmed so it will cool a room to a certain temp and turn itself down into a slower mode to keep you cool at the temp that you want. Also, window fans work wonders. However, open a window and turn the fan out it helps draw out the heat.

A fan that will cool..it's not an air conditioner? Was it expensive? Would love to know the name of that fan;)

If you're indoors with the windows closed, it ends up feeling hotter than if you leave them open. It's true for me, at least, though it might be different if the weather where you live is a lot hotter than it is over here. I just keep my curtains drawn. It works... not very well. But I have a fan, too, and that keeps me cool. xP

Thanks. I know it's incredibly hot here in the summer but I want to see if I can possibly make it through the summer using less electricity and thus lowering the budget a little.

i used fan and i dont have air conditioning so it helps me a lot, when it comes to opening the window, it actually depends to your location or place, if you have place surrounded with trees the better open it to let the fresh air enter but if theres no tree at all but just heat outside and too many vehicles then better closed it in the afternoon, let the window open at night and in the morning to let the cold air enter your room and closed the window during afternoon. if you dont have fan inside or air conditioning then it better to just let the window open to get extra air than no air at all.

I thought something the same.. To me ..it appears opening the window will only allow the heat to come in ..like a heater.. Thanks for confirming what I thought would work.

Put a bucket of ice behind a fan so the fan will produce cold air. We also open all the windows so the air would circulate inside. The air is hot but it's fresh. You don't wanna keep breathing the air inside. It's bad for your lungs.

I never thought of that; but I guess that is basically what the air conditioner does..blow cold air around. I thought about opening my freezer . but don't know if there is anything harmful in that.
