Learning drums is not easy, more people say it would be easy but they never tried it. I have a band mate before and he plays drums that's why I can say Its hard to learn drums. Here are my tips for you. You need to understand that drums are challenging instrument. Drums are not easy and it takes more time and patience to learn, As a novice a beginner it is important not to rush it.Take time and always start with the basics. Know your instrument. Assemble your drum set, set it up properly and get to know with it. This is a great way to acquire better understanding of how it all works and what are their functions. It would really much help in your learning progress, if you know how to tune your drums you might need some initial help with tuning, but it's advisable to try to learn it yourself. The sooner, the better. As what I said the basic are really important, they are great foundation and a guide of effective learning so don't skip or ignore them. Even if you think you already know - like how to sit and how to hold your drum stick correctly, All of these are your foundation. Don't be so excited and make so hurry this is the most common mistake. If you don't take time to learn the basics and understand them, you can quickly get discourage, bored and not enjoying it.That will be happens. At the first step you must have some sort guidance. What you need is lessons, they don't take a cost you a lot of money, you don't need to go to private school or a a instructor - although it's great if you can afford, but you do need lessons. If you don't want to spend money try to buy a quality DVD lesson or even search online there are a lot of drum lessons and tutorial or even try to search in youtube. Drums are great talent, but if you want it and be great, you will have to work for it, There are no instant talent. Good luck allamgirl!

thanks darkdeivu. at first i thought learning drums would be really easy, but of course now i know that it's not as easy as i used to think. :) well, as for assembling, what i bought is a digital set. it's a compact electronic drumset so i only study on drum pads and rubber pedals. so not much assembling for me, except selecting which drums i would like to use for the moment. i can customize the pads, but i just use the basic set. yep, i do watch videos on youtube and have found that they are a great help. and i also have a friend who is a drummer so if i give up on studying on my own, i can ask him for help and save my dream of learning how to play drums. :)

Were you trying to have a self study in playing the drums? I don't play drums but my cousins does and I'm part of a marching band so I guess i can somehow give you some tips. What I know is that the timing is the most important thing to consider in playing it. The first beat of the drum must be the loudest it gives an impact on the audience. Remember that the drums is the heart of a band. Drums will lead the other players to the right rhythm. Hope this helps! good luck Allamgirl

Hi. I am also a drummer. My advise is you would have to learn the rudiments and practice it every time.Make a routine on it everyday.I prefer to do some single stroke roll then double stroke roll, triple stroke roll and para diddles. You might have to buy some cheap stick for a beginner. If you don't have a practice pad you can use your pillow when practising this rudiments.I assure you this is great foundation of a drummer.Just practice and be patient don't rush.

Always practice your weak points, by practicing you are improving yourself and you are warming up your cue. Also it is very important to “listen”, always remember that you are accompanying other instruments if you don’t put your drums in sync with the other instruments then you might fall playing a different tune from the other. You should also keep in mind to tune your drums before playing; drum sets have different sound quality most especially when playing on different locations, by tuning it can take control on the place where you’ll be performing. Lastly, use a new pair of drum sticks, this will help you not breaking a stick while playing.
