I think that all that saying really means is if you eat healthy foods as opposed to junk foods then you will be less likely to get sick (or you won't get sick as often). An apple is really good for you so it's perfect to get that point across, plus it sounds good in the saying. But I don't think the apple is that literal in this, I just think the apple is standing in for ALL healthy foods.
*Just my opinion. If someone wants to disagree I'm curious to hear other peoples thoughts!

Hey lily,
On a funny note i can say that " A price of an apple keeps a person away"
Well the saying is good and guess its effective too. I eat more bananas than apples. Here in India we produce best quality of apples but sadly most of them r exported
Cheers,

no actually it helps but only one apple a day will not keep the doctor away. its the combination of all the fruits and there juices that will keep the doctor away for sure. and also vegetables. so start doing it drink at least 2-3 glass of freshly squeezed juice and you will not see the doctor for a very long time.

This does not mean the apple alone. It also relates to different kind of fruits considering that eating fruits is good for health. Although from what I understand, apple has fibers and fibers do clean up our system from bad deposits like fatty substances and cholesterol. So somehow, even literally, there is a point to such saying.

This very popular saying doesn't only refer to an apple which should be eaten everyday. It talks about fruits and nutritious foods in general. An apple is merely an example food that contains a lot of vitamins on it. It means that if you eat healthy food everyday, it will help you maintain a good and healthy body as well therefore keeping you away from the doctors.

This sentance: "an apple a day, keep the doctor away" means that apple is good for our body,we should often eat healthy food like fruits, vegetable. All kind of words like this sentance means the same. So we should absorb all kind of nourishment from fruits and vegetable and other healthy foods.

nope, it doesn't really keep the doctor away :)
becausethe apple doesn't actually contain so many vitamins
that we need a day, but it is just a saying that we all
must eat fruits and vegetables, because they are rich on
vitamins and are really very healthy!
