Should smokers have rights?

Smoking - No smoking within 50 feet of the building

I smoke and I know that's a gross habit but I don't think we should get treated crappy for it. I understand non-smokers wanting to be away from the smoke and totally respect that, but at my job it is reqired we stay 50ft away from the building yet there is no kind of covered area at all. So when it rains and snows we are screwed. I feel like we get punished for a choice in our lyfestyle. Do you think that there should be a smoking area or am I the one who is unreasonable by even requesting this?

yeah, Im a smoker too and I dont think its too much to ask for a desginiated smoking area. I mean the non-smokers have gotten laws passed for no smoking in public buildings. it does seem that they get treated more fairly.

I am even ok w/no smoking inside buildings. I don't and wouldn't in my house (except for bars I mean come on dont ban smoking in bars that goes hand in hand), but they discriminate against smokers. I thought we were past the point where we judge people for their lifestyle choices.

I dont think we'll ever get past it honestly, so many people have their opionons and almost all of them are hot headed about them, and I totally agree bar+smoking go together like two peas in a pod.

I don't think you are reasonable to request a smoking area. In fact, I think it should be provided without you needing to request for it. It's true, it is a very bad habit and you should respect the non-smoker. But that does not mean that you should suffer for it either. Just because you smoke does not mean you magically develop a shield against weather. On the other hand, why don't you try quitting, since it is very bad for your health?

Thank you, and I am trying to quit it's just not been successfull but I have to go stand in the rain or sit in my car if I do smoke. I work customer service and I just need that stress reliever but this is the year to quit I promised I wouldn't smoke more than 10 years and here is my 10th.

Thanks for the best response. Good luck with the quitting process. I know it's hard. I smoked for 2/3 years and quit about 5/6 years ago. It was very very hard even though I didn't smoke for as long as you did. More power to you, girl. I am sending happy thoughts your way.

I guess, you don't know the effect of your smoking to the non-smokers. Why don't you research for it so you could understand why. Smoking is like killing yourself little by little.

No I do know and Im not wanting to smoke to where it will affect non smokers just want a covered area 50ft from the building. I am not talking 50ft from the door I mean even if we are 200ft from the building but not from the door we have to go stand further away. I know it's gross and bad for you.

This is difficult because as a smoker I do believe smokers should have rights and are sometimes dealt with in a crappy manner or at least a perceived crappy manner by policies which prohibit something which is not a crime. But the thing with the issue over should a business provide some sort of facility for smokers is a tricky one. Because it is our choice to smoke and is not deemed a necessity unlike somewhere to eat food then businesses shouldn’t have to provide any sort of facility. They also don’t want to be seen to encourage a habit which can take you away from your work, which in my last job was often a case where the smokers, myself included, would nip out for far too many smoking breaks, especially as the smoking facility was hidden away. But then I think it is a nice gesture by a business to provide some sort of facility even if it’s only a small bus shelter type structure and makes those of us who do smoke feel less vilified for smoking and more happy as wellas focussed whilst working.

Well at my job we have scheduled breaks we must adhere to so we can't take a smoke anytime and I actually wasn't a smoker til I started in my current field of work and I feel that the smoke break helps me to work better. I have a ton of respect for those who don't need that nicotine break to do thier job well and can find another escape but unfortunately that helps me to calm down.

Well i wish if there are no smokers at all. But as you said, if there is a smoking area, this would help the non smokers and kids safe.

for me i think it sokay to smoke anywhere as long as there is good ventilation.. and its okay to smoke as longa s you're not infront of little choldren, pregnant women or old people whoa re uncomfortable with smoke which could damage their health.. smoking in th rigt palce is okay.. thats why most restaurants have smoking areas...
