Have you tried writing to a magazine editor?

I too am trying to find a catchy topic for one of the types of website sites you mentioned. What I am going to do is write about a life experience in order to catch some attention. I was involved in an abusive relationship so I am using my experience with an informative twist in order to help catch the attention of those reading it. Try to think of common topics people would search for, and put your own personal twist on it. I wrote a brainstorming list of topic ideas, and they all revolve around things I have either experienced or I am currently experiencing. Once I get the feel for writing articles and how to catch the attention of an audience I plan to move onto other areas, such as hobbies and interests. I highly recommend starting with something you know thoroughly. You mentioned liking house keeping and home design magazines, so why not write an article with information you learned from reading articles in the magazines you collect.
