are you looking forward to surprises in relationship? what kind of surprise?

i have been in a relationship with my boyfriend for about 4 years and our relationship keeps going well. we are all students in university and we are all dependent on our family, ^^ shameful... he loves me very much and i can feel his love. i love him too. but he is not a romantic person. never try to give me surprise. is it very usual? are men born to be silly and lazy when considering how to make their girl surprise or they just think it is unnecessary? i talked about this for a few time to him, and after our talk, he will give me something for surprise, like a postcard or bring me a cake when he comes home, but no more then 3 days, he will forget all about surprise or romantic... as a result, it is not a surprise at all as they just happened after i asked him to do so... even for my birthday gift, he asked me what i want and buy them together with me, give me no surprise of receiving a gift!!! am i asking to much as a girlfriend??? maybe it is my problem because i always want romantic relationship... but since we begin, he never try to concern about this question...
