I would like to start my own website but have no knowledge of scripts or any of that...I am wondering-do you have to go to school to learn this or can you just buy software and learn as you go? Advice welcome!

actually yes and no, these days you can learn on your own as well, there are tons of tutors for free, sites that offer you templates and forum which show you the ropes lol so not really you don't have to pay for a course on reading and following instructions.

That's why I asked...this art college wants about 30 grand to teach you and I'm thinking-there's got to be info or something more that I'm missing..so before I went committing to tons of money for nothing-I thought I'd ask the pro's at mylot By the way-I went to you site, gonna go back when I have more time..I tried to join one (readbud) and it didn't process...so I'm gonna retry tomorrow when I've got more time and patience

Hello Rachelle, Thanks you for the opportunity to advice and share some knowledge. I believe that we all are capable of learning anything we put our minds into, and feel schools are totally aware of that so those capitalize on our needs. The fact is that, books as expensive as they may be and tools the same, they won't total $30K ever. The thing about it is that with out the graduation paper, one does not have leverage when gaining business or clients. On the other hand one's experience is the leverage we need. So if you are serious about that study, then NO you don't need to pay that much money to learn and be great at this topic. But you do need to organize the learning steps which will lead you to ride the learning curve: sources, suppliers, marketing, and you must make the time to study through and through, just like if you were at school. Just because you would do it at home, does not mean do a half way job. Thank you for alerting me about the link in my website. The site is very good and informative. I do it everyday and gain, about 1.20 per day, will claim payment in a about 15 days: $50 dollars.

but, before I read others' comments, let me give out my ADVICE. i can later say a sorry, or give an amend. because, the reason is simple. i am a dunderhead. and I don't know any thing proper in this designing and internet. But, using the microsoft office tools, I have designed a wonderful site. and, then, reading continously for over 8 to 10 hours, searching and googling, i FOUND a wonderful software to host FORUMS too. JUST like mylot, but with a simple difference. check my profile for the forum link, and there see the homepage url. both are my own designs. if a mud-head like me could do this beautifully, YOU would start designing master pieces. Go AHEAD. ROCK the world. I will be there ready to sell the broken rocks of world for profit.

Hi Rachelle. How r u my dear friend. Had not been able to come online for quite sometime. Well since thats something i am also learning, i feel the best tis to get into a school who teaches u that. U can defiitely download free versions of dreamwiever software which helps u to create websites, but u wouldnt learn creating beyond that. Where as in a school, u get to know in depth, u can even add in the kind of options on ue web that u may imagine. U can create static websittes and also create animated dynamic ones. U would need to have knowledge on more softwwares if u need to build soe real good ones. Some of the major softwares u would need is Adobe Illustrator, Adobe photoshop, Flash, Soundforge and html scripts. Incase if u can learn some XML and java scripts it would be even more better. Feel free to ask as many questions u need. I am always there with u.

I am really so sorry that i had reduced my frequency on mylot and u missed me so much. Well its nothing complicated just that its a compilation of multiple softwares and scripts added in. So if u need to do the best u need to have a knowledge on the maximum softwares so that u could use all the elements in. U will surely be able to set up ur shop and do good. I have that faith and trust in u.

Most of the things you need to learn can be found online, you could even buy a ready made template and even if you wanted to, you could hire someone to update your website for you. There are sits out there to learn the skills needed to have your own website, just type in "HTML, CSS, C++, Javascript... etc.

there is no need to go to any schools or classes. designing website is not a big task today. but designing very good and attractive website is a task which you can only learn by experiences. so in my view you should wait and study at your home and the best website for a beginner to learn is w3schools.com.

Buy nothing. It's all available for free. I have built 6 websites using Netscape Navigator 7.2 (free download), just search. Using Netscape Composer (part of the Navigator download) and Wordpress I have built all the sites I need. You can buy scripts or get hem free. The only reason it might be worth paying for course would be if you were going for a wage paying job in the field, where you would need a piece of paper, testifying to your skills.

Rather you than me. I'll keep working away at the niches. I would never go near that sort of thing anyway using Netscape, with a bit of Dreamweaver thrown in when I need a form.

Actually, the school only guides you in learning things such as web designing. it is very possible for you to learn this subject without going to school as long as you're determined to learn. You can find everything online, but you can learn faster if you're in school because there is sharing of ideas between students.

That's what I was thinking..why take out expensive student loans for something you can learn on your own time at home. I have been starting to learn a bit.

Hi, You really don't need to take any course at least for web designing. Materials that are available online are enough for the task. There are some free web editors that you may consider downloading. But even that wouldn't be absolutely necessary. All you need is the latest version of any web browser and a text editor like notepad. If you have these two things you can learn everything about web designing. You don't need to learn any programming languages like Java, C, C++, Python etc. Scripting is quite different from programming, even though they sometimes look similar. If you are serious about learning web designing, just start from HTML. There are plenty of stuffs available for free on this. Once you are done with HTML you start learning Javascript courses. As soon as you master the Javascript you should try some application softwares to make your job quick and easy. Dreamweaver can be good to start with. If you want to put animations of your own its better if you learn the basics of Flash. Photoshop is a good software for photo editing but you can successfully edit a photo in flash too. Don't start learning softwares unless you feel that you absolutely need it. You don't even need to buy any book to learn web designing. The resources that are available online for free will be more than sufficient. thanks God bless you

Hi Rachelle, I think you need to enroll for that course, its quiet complicated when you just get some knowledge in the web, web design gets along with other related topics you need to know.eg.corporate logo and image, color theory, 3d modeling and animation, basic drawing skill, typography and many more. You can hire a private tutor for web design learning at home but for sure you wanted to get at least a certificate for that, for future need I guess.I suggest you to enroll a part time course for web design.Good luck.
