I'm a musician, not a Music God or a very good one but I can play several instruments in my band. I could say I'm the band leader, not because I'm the best in it but I'm the one planning the playing sessions and provides the sheets for the music we have to rehearse. Well, this discussion is not all about my playing but my musical preference.. Is it fine to have so many musical genres to listen to? For me it's a good thing because I have many influences on my playing.. I like metal, rock, hip-hop, country, reggae, and many more... Are you like me who is not contented on one genre only?

Wow. a guitarist too huh? Cool!! I also started playing guitar in my childhood having my father as my first teacher. We two used to sing along and each of us play guitars. KI still jam with him sometimes in the band. I think he's one of our few fans here in our place. lol

From what I have observed most musicians have more then one preferred genre of music and this is completely normal. You appreciate music and the different thing that each genre brings to the music industry together. It's more of an admirable trait then anything.

I enjoy Santana's Guitarist skills as well, he is really a good guitarist and his duo's with other artists is cool.

I like different types of music but i like the oldies the best. I'm a big country music fan but don't care alot for the new country.

They are o.k. but i still like the older singers better than the new ones. The radio station i listen to plays nothing but oldies. I'm showing off my old age, lol. Have a good one.

I like all types of music.. but playing instruments I'm not so skilled on it.. I play a little on guitar, but not that skilled enough to be able to show it without help or guide..hehe.. need more practice on it.. Its nice to know, you can play a lot of musical instrument.. Good for you.. You must be really rich, to be able to play all types of instruments.. Good luck to your band..

Sad to say, i have difficulties practicing my guitar again.. I recently have an accident, i broke my left arm, a complete fracture in my left arm wrist. I broke it during a basketball event.. i was push away and got out of balance from a player in the other team. Luckily, i was able to have it operated together with the funds and help of my fellow friends, workmates and my families.. I am now a cyborg, with a stainless metal in my left arm... I still having difficulties holding big and heavy things.. i was advice not to lift big weights and let it rest for a year..avoid too much physical and long continues work using my left arm..

I had fractured my arm when I was in high school, I had a skateboard accident, lol. That was stupid of me to ride it without cautioning myself to level the balance. I didn't play the guitar for months then, thank God I recovered. I have difficulty in playing the guitar right now because my arm is still twisted. It kind of slowed down my playing so I stopped playing the lead and stayed with rhythm, bass or drums or sing if the vocalist is not around. Our drummer has fractured arm too, lol. But he has still dexterity in banging the drums and cymbals. Rock & Roll!!!

hi basqui, i admire you for being able to play different kinds of instruments! i love to listen to any kinds of music whatever the genre is,as long as i can relate to the song or the sounds were really good to hear. well, i once studied how to play guitar but i just can't learn it.well, my instructor left me without notice.(he is my cousin who used to live here beside our house, but our parents have misunderstandings that time that leads to living separately). i haven't studied guitar after then that's why. but if i have the chance to learn about guitar again,i'd be happy to.

Oh, if you were just near then I could lend you one...

Well, unfortunately I dont play an instrument even though, I do own a guitar. But where our main differences lie is that, my favourite genre is mainly constrained. I am a huge rock fan, specifically Classic Rock, and I think its because I have stuck so much to one type of music, I am not very open to pop or R 'N B. I like some of the sub-genres associated with Rock such as Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Blues and Blues Rock.

Rock was my passion before but rock wasn't received warmly in my locality so our band have to have openness in order for us to play what the audience like in order for us to get paid on gigs..

Hi, I'm a musician too. I play keyboards (piano/organ) and did so professionally when I was younger for around 12-15 years. I ran a few bands myself. Whilst I cannot play every intrument in the band, I had trained classically as a pianist from a very young age and passed many exams etc. But I like other music like jazz, pop and rock - in fact any genre really. I think when we are trained, we can identify with any music. I can also here nearly every instrument when a band and ochestra played, and could separate them in my mind, which was something many other people I talked to could not do, to my surprise. So this helped a great deal when I used to run my bands and groups. They were great days as a pro. musician, but hard work. I often feel that I would love to do it again now, but when I think of loading up my car to get to different gigs, I know I don't have that sort of stamina anymore especially over the last 4 years since I suffered a heart attack. Good luck with your music. It's a great life! _Derek

Oh, so you have more experience then.. I think I can't play with my band in gigs for now, they are busy and also me on our own things... I agree a musician's life is hard but enjoyable.. I wish I'd grow old having music always.. Some really don't have good ears, some people even are tone-deaf, they can't tell if they have the right notes or not..

We are all flexible.. I guess majority of us are into many different genres of music, because of the singers we like and support.. haha =D We do have many idols whom we like right?? And not all of them are singing in the same genre.. Just like me, i do like country singers, and country songs, but at the same time, i'm into classical music as well.. haha =D I dun like rock, but i like hip hop, as well as latin and pop.. haha =D

I think I am different to you.I like music so much but don't know how to play any music players like guitar, piano, and everything. I wish I could do it like you did but I guess I have different skills than yours and you must be thankful of it. Congrats for being a band leader I know not all can do that idea. Might be that's your talent that you should develop more and more. It could lead you to what you wish to do in your life.

Lol at the segue. :P I play only one instrument and I do get very controlling when it comes to a band. Mostly because the members I get usually are very unlike me (or you, I think), are very one track minded. I really believe that you have to appreciate... AT LEAST appreciate the beauty in all music. Even the pop genre which practically most people dismiss as garbage. I, on the other hand, don't believe in genres. I think it has served its purpose, it has now become the opposite of what it was originally meant for, and it is now time for it to leave. :) 2 cents! Great topic! ++! :)

Definitely! If you only listen to one kind or a few kinds of music and choose to dismiss other genres you box yourself in and in turn stunt your music maturity. Your point of view is definitely on the right track in my book!

Well, we all have the freedom to choose what we really like but I think our minds shouldn't be just contained in a box. expansion of horizon is a good thing. More space to breath. More things to work on..

Of course, even those that re considered Musical Gods admit that they are still on the process of learning even if they have superior skills. I idolize some guitarists who have admitted that most of their students have matured and have turned out to be better ones than them. One example is Satriani and his student Kirk Hammett. Even if Kirk is more known now, it's still an honor on his mentor because he had made one man famous because of his lessons.

I'm not contented with just one genre of music. Right now the majority of the music that I listen to is country, but I am familiar with all kinds of different music and I have been for the majority of my life. When I was a young lady, the majority of the music that I listened to was the pop music from the 60s and 70s and then when I was a bit older, I listened to the music that was popular at the time. I listened to bands like Creed, Match Box 20, Goo Goo Dolls and even the Backstreet Boys and N'SYNC (gasp). So, you can easily say that I am influenced by all kinds of different music.

Although I have one favorite genre that I listen to I actually enjoy a whole range of music from big band to rock and roll. I consider myself well rounded musically. I think that people who limit themselves to only one style of music are very narrow minded. Now of course they have the right to listen to what they want but by limiting themselves to one genre they are missing out on so much.

I believe that music is the extension of our thoughts as well as expression of our hearts. There are musics that have deeply touched my life that whenever I hear them I couldn't help but sank into the melody or to its lyrics... I am transported to a different world whenever I hear the song or music that has left a great mark in my life and in my heart... I am like you, too. I love listening to Jazz Music, reggae,R & B, Country music..:-)

That's so unfortunate of you. Well, I've started playing the guitar when I was young, my father was my first teacher then. Then when I got to puberty, they enrolled me on drumming lessons and I started joining musical bands but still I couldn't get superior skills... Well, I just enjoy playing my band right now... Lots of genres make me wanna sing along or dance along with the beats.
