Today Dimitar Berbatov announced his international retirement on a press conference in Sofia,Bulgaria. It was very unexpected for me! He was our captain and the top scorer with 48 goals in 78 appearances for Bulgarian national team!

I am myself surprised by this move of his. Is he doing this to concentrate on his club football? Over the last year he has come under severe scrutiny over his place in the Manchester United team. May be that has prompted this decision from him and if that is so then it should really be disappointing. Cheers! Ram

I don't think he's doing it to concentrate on his club football. He just don't like a lot of things in Bulgarian Football Union. He also said that someday he will come back here in Bulgaria and will fix everything in the bulgarian football!

Hmm... but I saw some reports in some English newspapers which said that this was being done as he was concerned with his form at Man United. Also as Akuler mentioned that if Bulgaria go close to world cup qualification he might just come back into the fold!! Cheers! Ram

So what? He plays really well but in the national team does he NOTHING! The players which play the most famous game in the world without heart doesn't have place in it. We saw that in the friendly matches against Belgium and South Africa our attack is even better.

I totally agree. I think that Berbatov used to play with his whole heart but after he saw the "Foreign football" he forgot his origins. The fame and money made him blind to the most important - believing in your country and supporting it in any way possible. Isn't helping the national team the same as SUPPORTING the country? I disrespect Berbatov for his decision.

Hi ivelinr, I believe it is only a temporary basis. Dimitrar Barbetov is still young at the age of 29 and he still a few years ahead of him before he suppose to retired. I think he made this decision because Bulgaria fail to qualify for the World Cup and he does not believe he could contribute more to the national team. He might also try to concentrate to the club level competition. This year, Barbetov performance at his club, Manchester United, is anything but good. He become a fans booing victim especially after he loss a lots of great chance to make a goal. His scoring rate is worst. Alex Ferguson also prefer the younger striker to be fielded rather then Berbatov when Wayne Rooney can not deliver. He must has low esteem now and try to improve it.

It's a great loss for the Bulgarian team. He's only 29 and has an exceptionally good International record. A lot of people have been critical of his time at Manchester United but I can see what a great player he is and If he stays at Old Trafford then I think he will regain his consistent form.

What do you expect from him to do,sit around and listen to all the critics, all the people in our country are swearing at him,he makes records for our country and still there are haters. He would rather give up on our team, and focus on his own carrier in Manchestar united. If it wasn't for his 48 goals,Bulgaria will be group antarctic group,if there is such a group that is.

I totally agree. The international retirement of Dimitar Berbatov is a great loss to the Bulgarian national team and to the international football competitions as well (at least the level of national teams since I understand he will continue to play for his club). Living in Romania, I had the chance to see Berbatov playing quite a few times against us and I've personally whitnessed his talent and maturity as a player and captain. But Bulgaria had always a pool of amazing players, sooner or later another leader will rise. Be sure of that and keep walking!

Wow, that is a surprise. Usually, players love to play for their home country so for him to retire is a mystery isn't it? Perhaps he needs a rest, who knows?
