Magazines and Stories

Has anyone noticed a stark reduction in the number of short stories in the magazines nowadays? Years ago it seemed as if this was a vibrant market for writers but has since been significantly reduced. For those writers who do write short stories for the magazines, is there a demand still for that product?

I did notice that. I don't know much about the market today, but it seems that creative non-fiction is getting more popular in the print media, especially if it's written by someone popular (Dave Eggers is one of them I think). At this juncture, I'm wondering if there are people sending in their work at all (syndication issues?), or if they keep getting their work rejected (not remotely as exciting as creative non-fic?).

Non-fiction has always had a strong audience because of how timely the events of the material usually are. Writers have to keep trying to get their work accepted and not stop when a magazine rejects a story, whether the story is fiction or non-fiction.

I agree. Writer's shouldn't give up. Something else that I've noticed...the kind of non-fiction writing that is prevalent on print nowadays is written by people in their mid-20s to 30's. It could be about new parenthood, or recent unemployment, or some weird episode in their childhood which may or may not reference some late 70's or 80's pop culture event. It's either they observe things that their parents went through that the latter hadn't noticed, or they're nostalgic. New and old as reviewed by the present, so to speak.

Writers are younger nowadays because of many factors, but the publishing industry used to let writers work as apprentices to established writers and then develop a small article or two for a magazine, but now writers in their twenties and thirties have books published. That is an exciting change.

You may want to check out the latest copy of "Writer's Market" to see who is publishing what and how much they are paying. There are two different kinds of periodicals that would publish short stories and if that is your market you'll want to seek out the literary ones as opposed to the fashion/sports/etc consumer ones.

Indeed there are many magazines that have a place for fiction and this is to be celebrated as it seems like many of the magazines have reduced their departments and staffs in the last few recent years.
