What Is The Big Attraction With Formula One? I Don't Get It!

Is it just men that like F1 Racing? Having said that I knew a lady at work a few years ago and she would actually FOLLOW the Ferrari team, especially in Europe. Obsessed she was!
Maybe it's because I don't drive that I find it so boring to watch. Granted, whenever there is some overtaking (which is rare) I get as excited as anyone else but, most of the time, I sit there and think, "what a complete waste of time!"
Silverstone here in England is currently having a re-vamp and the track has been re-done. I agree with this totally as I quite like Silverstone. Also Monaco, which will be on tomorrow. Other than that..
In my humble opinion F1 died along with Ayrton Senna.
Anyone else agree? Is the sport TOO safe now?

Hi there,
I know what you mean, I used to follow the Grand Prix races all the time. It was entertaining to watch such a fast paced sport. But it has all changed nowadays. The rules have changed so much because of safety that it's lost alot of appeal, and not just to me but many of my friends. Dont get me wrong, I certainly dont want to see anyone hurt or killed just for entertainment value, thats not sport.
The new rules have made it very difficult for any team or driver to shine.
I beleive it is something they FIA are trying to change but without compromising safety, which, after all, is the most important thing.
Most sports are having to change because of safety rules, I guess it's something we must get used to.
Have a speedy day and enjoy..

Lewis Hamilton is the perfect example of a F1 driver who is getting more and more frustrated by the never endings rules impossed on him and the sport in general. I think he is alot like a young Micheal Schumacher, he just wants to get on with actually racing wheel to wheel.
New rules are crippling the sport, just ask M.Schumacher how he feels about being penalised 20 seconds in yesterdays Grand Prix.

I often think what the likes of Lewis Hamilton would be like if he'd been around in Nigel Mansell's day, do you know what I mean?
I'm sure he'd absolutely love the freedom and the fact he could do - basically, whatever he likes!

I don't get it either. It just seems like a big circle. Now if it were on a Real winding road, that would be interesting.

Sweet! Now that sounds like a race I would watch.

Like Rallying you mean? As far as I am concerned Rallying is far more dangerous (and fun) than F1. They may not drive as fast but have to concentrate at all times. They drive in the dark as well.

Personally I find F1 rather boring as it has such hi-tech cars that tend to stick to the track like glue. I am not saying it is easy to drive such machines, but for enterntainment I much prefer the saloon car racing where up-rated but standard cars race and don't quite stick to the road like an F1 car.
I have been to Silverstone, but not for the racing. I used to own an XR3i and the owner's club used to meet there once a year in September. People used to take their modified XRs on the track to race and that was quite fun to watch. Some of them weren't up to the task and ended up on the side with clouds of steam and smoke billowing from the engine bays. I never took mine on the track though - too expensive to drive flat out around the track with the extra strain on all the components.
There was always a great atmosphere at Silverstone on those days.

I've never been to Silverstone myself but it does seem a special place to be...no matter what the reason is. I only hope it doesn't rain this year lol.

I used to watch it when I was younger but now, in the US it's not on a major network. That and the races are shown in real time so they are not always on at convenient hours. (I used to watch the races on tape, so I gues they could edit out some of the boring parts.) I know there was a time when F1 drivers were like pop stars being followed by groupies. (But the same could be said about the early astronauts here.) I think things might have gone downhill some when Michael Schumacher and Ferrari started to dominate the sport. I used to love to watch Monaco but I don't really know any of the drivers anymore. Now I just follow NASCAR and I haven't watched as much of that.

I only watch it because of two Brits being in the same team..and the fact hubby has it on regardless.

I don't get it either. I find it pretty boring to watch.
I watch motorcycle racing and have been following the seasons of MotoGP and world Superbikes for the last 20 years or so. This is exciting racing as there is much more happening at all times. The passing manoeuvres are crazier and more often and the consequences of an accident can be much worse.
When I watch F1, it seems like there are hardly any passing moves and the one time that I went to a live F1 race in Australia, you had to watch through all these big fences and it was really hard to see what was going on. I have been to many live motor bike racing events and you can see much more of the action.

How do the bikers go round corners like that (with their knee practically on the ground) without falling off? Is it something to do with gravity keeping them on?
I used to love Barry Sheen.
I remember seeing a rather nice pic of him in the newspaper and another pic showing an x-ray of all the metal bits keeping him together.
Sadly missed.
As is James Hunt and Ayrton Senna in F1.

i was able to see an actual f1 car and it's beautiful but i guess i would have to agree with a lot of people that an actual f1 race is a bit boring. I simply can't see the fun in seeing cars travelling so fast that you can hardly see them pass you by and going round and round the race like forever. I guess they're more fun to watch on TV. it's so fast that it's a disaster waiting to happen and when that happens that's when the excitement starts, to know if the driver escaped alive or not.

I must admit I prefer the coverage of the F1 races on the BBC. For a few years ITV had it and it was a nightmare because they would put adverts on DURING THE RACE! Some dramatic moments were lost when they did this and people found it very irritating to say the least.
Now that it's back on the BBC we get some brilliant coverage of the event. Cameras everywhere but the actual races themselves hardly ever live up to the hype beforehand.
I don't like this new ruling of banning refuelling, so the tanks are now massive to accommodate all the fuel in there. This means the cars are heavier.
They still do pitstops for tyres but it really isn't the same having no refuelling.
Bad idea!

I rarely watch F1 racing...I find it rather boring. If I do watch any racing, it's Nascar. The passing that goes on in Nascar is continuous and that can get rather exciting. But even Nascar, I don't think I've watched a race in over a year! Have a great day, Janey.

I've often wondered if it's different if you are actually THERE experiencing the atmosphere and doing a spot of people watching. Some of the tracks though are now in the middle of deserts and look so silly, flat and boring that I can't help thinking that it's all about making as much money as possible but the entertainment value has gone down. The punters will have to fork out a lot of dosh to get into these venues and I think it's unfair that the courses are so boring now. They must get drunk and eat a lot is all I can say!
