Writing can be a very tough job!

Hi, friends. I wonder if you're also writing for some other sites like AC, helium or textbroker apart from mylot. If you do, then do you think it difficult to organize and put your thoughts down? Personally, I'm only working on mylot, which sometimes even seems difficult for me. From time to time, I find it so hard to write down what's really in my mind. As a non-native English speaker, I take advantage of every chance to improve English, especially in writing. The best way to polish it, as you're very clear about, is to write as much as possible. After reading lots of discussions about writing on other sites, I thought of giving it try myself and registered in helium. But the sad thing is I've never got started. My problem is I find myself lost and don't know where to begin. Perhaps I'm not gifted enough to write professional articles. I know many people here are doing freelance writing jobs on other sites and I deeply admire their talent to write long articles. If you're one of them, can you share with me your thoughts on writing? Do you think it a tough job to write or otherwise? Thanks in advance!

I support you and will be happy to share all I can. I think when there is a will there is a way. When I came to the US, I did not know but only one phrase in English, walked around with a dictionary and spent my summer learning English. So hang in there and keep doing the great job you are doing. If you are having a hard time getting started just write what comes to mind and then edit afterwards :)

I'm getting confident now with your encouragment. It's indeed important not to translate what's in my mind before writing them down. Actually this is quite common among non-native English speakers, which in fact is a great obstacle in their learning English. I'll check your profile later to sign up in Bukisa. Perhaps making money can be motive for my continual writing.

Thanks, my friend. Your words always encourage me a lot. I think the biggest problem with me is that I'm afraid I can't write as idiomatic as native English speakers do. No matter it is the word selection, syntax or other aspects, I doubt I can never be as proficient as native speakers. Of course, it can be a quite difficult process to achieve that, but I really want to be there.

OH dear friend you are welcome! I think you should not be afraid of anything ever. Fear is man kind's worst enemy. You should trust your will to do and knowledge more. I think you are doing a great job and should keep on doing it. Please realize they are only words to be learned and memorized. One peace of good advice? I would like to share with you: Stop or do not translate in your mind. Just learn new words and definitions so you will be an expert on them. Keep going my friend you are doing great. I think you need to visit my profile, website link and the section where I list my earning money sites. Sign up for the one that leads to "Bukisa", it will pay you for posting your writing work, well pays for individual people's visits. I think that will be great motivation for you to do more writing and show it to the world, get paid as well.

I'd say never give up and keep on trying. When I first joined, I wasn't able to grasp the concept of what's here too. But after awhile, it feels better to write and interact thus gaining some knowledge too. If you wan to dabble at article writing, you can try blogging as well. It's fun and you can then try to join sites which you think may be beneficial to you in future. For me, I'll stay here for awhile and enjoying the ride. Hope your experience here will always be fun for you.

Hi, thanks for responding. I've never ever been interested in blogging. Posting in mylot is much more fun compared with blogging. So far, I've received some suggestions and encouragement from kind mylotters, and I'm think of setting foot in article writing to further improve my writing skills. Of course, I'll never quit mylot from which I've learned so much.

You are very much welcome.. My best advice is to stick in the lot too. There are lots of things to be learned here, as you have said and I couldn't agree more. Article writings are like an improvement process, which you have said too.. but the social interaction pull has always been here. Since we get to answer and comment discussions on real-time and lag time, which is awesome. It feels like interacting for real. Article writings and blogging are like a continuation of our non-talkative self, hee. I think I look at it that way. I miss blogging though.. but like you, I'm perhaps going to stick my head in the lot more.

Hello friend!! I am also working as freelance content writer... Well, I am not working for these sites... I have got two clients for whom I write articles but both are from India so pay less... One of them gives content to write on current news so that is easy task... I can go through several sites to find the news and after reading... I can write in my own words...News is News.. so nothing more to add or think.... as if apple is falling down then that will be falling down... Another client gives random topics... Yes, there is real test of writing skills... I have to do research work for longer before I can start writing... I make my own theme for every paragraph and after that I start writing... It makes the job easy when we have set theme for every paragraph... It is also not tough job to use keywords in them... Dear friend, never give up on writing and take out this thing from your mind that you are not professional writer or so on... How you can get positive response till you will have negative thinking...??? Just keep working on your content... Be optimistic... SURELY... you will do it... because you can do it dear friend... Good luck dear friend!! Have great time!! Happy myLotting!!

Thanks a lot for giving so specific a response. I understand what you meant, but there always seems to be a voice telling me that I can't write good articles. Whenever I read others' articles, I become more firm in the idea that I can never write as good as he/she does. The organization as well as the creative thoughts seem so complicated to me. I guess it's my inner fear that holds me back. I'm oppressed a lot by the fact that I'm not a native English speaker and there may be many stupid mistakes in my writing.

Everyone was born genius? Yes. Everyone was expert in English from birth whether native or non native? No. Environment matters but what about determination? Determination does play a part, but it doesn't necessarily determine the final success. some people may never be successful even though they are strong-minded and determined. Everyone has ability or not? Yes. Can you achieve some target with fear and negativity in your mind? No. Why you can't write while other can... do others have 4 hands and you have got 2? I'm afraid the biggest factor which holds me back is that I can't write as idiomatic as native speakers do. I believe I can write too, but my writing isn't as readable as those written by native speakers. Do others have 2 brains and you have got just one ? No. Thank you so much for your encouraging words. I still have some doubts, but I think I'm almost ready to give it a try.

Hello friend!! I want to ask you some questions... Answer them please... Everyone was born genius? Everyone was expert in English from birth whether native or non native? Environment matters but what about determination? Everyone has ability or not? Can you achieve some target with fear and negativity in your mind? Why you can't write while other can... do others have 4 hands and you have got 2? Do others have 2 brains and you have got just one ? If you will answer all these questions to yourself friend.. then you will definitely know the fact that you are also equivalent to each other and you can also do all what others are doing... Don't be negative or impressed... I am sure you will do it my friend because you are also from all of us.. If you ever need any kind of help... myLotters are always here to help you... You can send me message anytime... Just don't lose your confidence... I hope you are determined now!! Have nice time dear friend!! Be determined!! Happy myLotting!!

Thanks for such encouraging words. I guess you're right. Writing is all about practice and perseverance. The more we write, the more proficient we'll be. I'll keep working on it, though I'm not sure I'll ever be able to write as good an article as a native English speaker does. We may be from the same country, right? We have no good weather this weekend. Anyway, wish you a nice day!

Writing is a very tough job indeed. The hardest part of writing is the content of your paper. You need to provide the readers a piece that is worthy enough of reading. Topics may vary, but we need our topics to be relevant for our readers.

Yes, you're right. A good writer should be responsible for his readers. That means he should always put readers in the first place during his writing process, taking readers' needs into account and making efforts to know about readers.

Writing is definitely a tough way to make a living! My advice to you is just write it and post it -- everywhere! The more you write, the better you will get. Do a search and find writing tips specific to your style and genre, but don't be afraid to stretch yourself in different areas of writing. Start a writing blog -- bloggers are great for giving writing support and encouragement. And, of course, find all the writing or social networks where you can post your writings and make a few pennies along the way. I mainly stick to sites where I can post my stuff elsewhere, too, rather than being limited to posting at one site only. Network! Support other writers and they'll support you!

Thanks so much for your suggestion. I've been writing regularly, though I don't rely on writing to make a living. After keeping writing for a long time, I already understand the basic trick of writing. There can never be a short-cut but perseverance and persistence. As to blog writing, I'm afraid I'm not a blog type, nor can I steal time to manage a blog. Currently, mylot is the only social network where I come to share ideas with others. Anyway, I'll just stick to mylot to practice and enhance my writing.

My biggest problem is finding the time to write. It seems I am always so busy with other things and with my kids. At this moment, I'm here on MyLot, listening to 2 of my children play, a friend sitting in front of me telling me about her new boyfriend, I have tons of housework that needs to be done, laundry to be folded, etc but yet I'm still on here just trying to make a little extra money. It isn't always easy to keep focused on one topic with so much going on around me. So, I guess those are the two hardest things for me to write, finding time and being able to focus. I love writing and I would love to be better at it. Maybe in time, I will find the time and be able to completely focus on it! Good luck with your writing and developing it!

I can understand. It's absolutely impossible for me to write anything in a noisy surrounding. I'm now an unmarried girl with nothing going on around me when I post here, but from time to from I still find it hard to get any ideas out of my brain. At least you are trying to focus no matter what's going on around you. I really admire you for that.

You're right. I'm from China. As the proverb goes "Practice makes perfect", I think it is the same with writing. The more I write, the more proficient I'll be in writing. This is what I've been doing all the time. Whenever I'm given time and chances, I come here to write something, though my thoughts may not seem professional to some people. But what really matters is the process of writing.

Aa not a native speaking english person, I deeply felt very difficult to write as a freelance, when I once registered in some sites, one reason is want to improve my english writing, the second reason is want to earn some money, however when I face it, I don't what topic I should start, and found it's very difficult to organize the artical, is it the reason that we don't have a good skill of writing? At last, I gave up other sites, because I found here mylot is a good site, I can improve my english skill, and I can make many friends here.

I believe earning extra money is secondary to most non-native English speakers here. We're here mainly for drilling writing skills and we're sure to meet our expectation as long as we work hard on it.

Yes it is a bit tough especially when you are given a title and you do not know the faintest thing about the particualr topic. However as time goes by you get used to it and you tend to write faster and better. Besides i find it crucial to look up info on the internet, read on a few good sites and then start writing what i have learnt and think is relevant to the title of my article.

i get what you mean. sometimes, writing is fast and easy for me especially if the topic is something i am passionate about. however, i still spend considerable amount of time editing and all, call me a perfectionist, or whatever. however there are times when my mind is just blank and i dont know what to do, especially if the topic is something i'm not interested in or i am not too familiar with. that's why i love brighthub because it lets me choose what topics to write about.
• China

Brighthub? Is it a paid-to-write site too? I hope you're doing well with that site. I guess it's the same with everyone that when he's interested in a topic, he has so much to share, and vice verse.

Hi,my friend. This is a good and hard question for me. As we all know, writing is not easy. To be a good writer, you must take great pains to do that. In your question, you have mentioned that your writing is not as idiomatic. I can understand this situation. But I think you lack much confidence and oberservation in your life. No one was born genius or talented writer. Greatminds or masters in writing succeeded just because they devoted themselves to writing and could stick on doing that. They are confident, encouraged and brave to have a try over and over again. Probable they have failed many many times, but they still kept on writing, never thouht that they would stop doing what they were interested in. So they could make great achievements in writing at last. In addition, if you do want to write very well, you have to spend much time to read more and more articles or texts. And accumulate a lot of writing materials. Apart from this, you should write down what you thought ,what you heard, and what you saw. You add these content to your articles. I am not a freelance on myLot,but I have a try to write something that I am interested in. By this way, I practize my writing. Even if I make some mistakes, but I am not afraid of anything. My aim is to improve my English. I am sure that this is the same to you . Tks!

I highly appreciate your response, friend. It's so true that writing requires time, energy and commitment. I read many British literary masterpieces and learned that some great writers were not as successful at the very beginning as we think. They gone through lots of frustrations and failures. But the good thing is they never gave up. Their strong faith supported them all along the way toward success. These are typical examples from which I should learn something. After reading so many kind and encouraging responses to this topic, I just feel so grateful to all of my friends who are always there supporting and encouraging me. I've already determined to keep going whatever difficulties I may have to face.

Hi, thanks for your response. I don't quite agree with you on this point. It's nearly impossible for a non-native English speaker to write as well as a native English speaker does. You may have read some discussions which have no grammatical mistakes, perhaps including mine, but you can easily find out that they are not idiomatic. That means native English speakers do not write in that way. Besides, I'm not talking about earnings, I'm talking about polishing writing skills.

Hi there, I think that you write quite well, compared to many others. I think all your practice is paying off. I'm not a native English speaker either, as such a lot of what we learn in school has to be put into practice whether in speech or in writing. Besides practice, I think you need to organise your thoughts in a particular manner. I think that you are intimidated by the length of the article before you even started on them. You can start by writing on topics which you are familiar with. Then if you are more comfortable, you can write on more informative topics which may require a little more research. But how do you really get started? I have a simple trick. I usually write an article in a list format. This means that you can develop your article with a simple listing of points and a little bit of elaboration. Some examples include: 1) 10 things I love about American Idol 2) 5 things I admire about President Obama 3) 5 characteristics a teacher should have These are some examples from the top of my head. Then brainstorm on the points and elaborate with one or two paragraphs each. Your article can be ready quite quickly this way. I think writing can be tough if it has to be written in a certain style or language you are unfamiliar with. Otherwise, it should be manageable. The good thing about mylot is that you can write in any style you are comfortable with.
• China
16 May 10
I guess you're right. I'm kind of intimidated by the length of the article. When I read a very long article, I feel nothing but admiration for the writer. I don't know why I'm so oppressed by the idea of long article writing now. I did once write a very long postgraduating thesis which was about 30,000 words in English. The so-called long articles now are really nothing compared with my thesis. Perhaps it's time for me to pick up confidence. Thanks a lot for your kind suggestions. I'll surely follow them in my writing.

Thanks for sharing, friend. I may guess we're of the same nationality, right? It's nice to hear that you pick up writing again. I always believe that writing needs continual persistence and practice. Once we stop, we'll gradually be unable to write anything. If I'm away from mylot for as many as 3 days due to some inevitable matters, I find myself lost in posting. Then I need to reflect on my thoughts to find new ideas. You made yourself clearly understood and your thoughts are highly appreciated. Have a nice day!

I'm sorry to heart that. But from what I've learned, almost everyone has at least an article being rejected. So you're not alone. Due to the fierce competition, being rejected is quite a normal thing. I'm only working on mylot and cannot really give you any good advice. But perhaps you can try gagabux which seems to be so hot these days and lots of people have received payment from it. Of course, you need to recommend as many referrals as you can to boost your earnings. All in all, I suggest you to focus more on mylot, though the earnings grow slowly.
