Why is there a system in place on earth where one creature is another creature's food?Is this not cruelty? Why are we made to kill pests. Why are there in the first place? Did God have a hand in this? God is all merciful. Is He not?

Hi, you have raised a nice topic for discussion. I found an answer to this question, nearly twenty years ago. I was living in a government provided accommodation. It had a big compound. In the space in the front, I had a garden. In the rear, there were servant's quarters. In the open space there, some trees had come up. The trees were of the kind, which come up on their own and thrive even if you do not water them. One significant thing about those trees was they were crooked and ugly to look at. Uprooting them would have created large holes in the ground and it was not easy. I asked my servant to chop them and leave the stubs. I was surprised that the trees started to grow again. One thing I noticed that the trees were no longer crooked. The trees stood straight and now they were beautiful to look at. I realized that chopping them was not an act of cruelty. On the contrary, it was an act of mercy. I had helped the trees to evolve in a better way. You might have observed that if you simply cut the onions, they remain pungent as ever, but if you beat it with a rolling pin, they develop a kind of sweetness in them. In the same way, God subject us to hardship, because he wants us to develop a kind of sweetness in us. Therefore, with old age comes humility. Therefore, we must trust God for his mercies. We think in the moments of our trials, troubles and tribulations that God is being cruel to us, but it is His way of showing us mercy.

The example that you have given does not explain the reason why one animal should eat another and so on. Hardships in other areas probably as you said will mould us into being better human beings but this concept of one creature being someone else's food could have been avoided. Living in fear and dread is not something that will mould anyone into being better beings least of all those poor creatures.

I see the attitude 'what can't be cured has to be endured'. My point is that instead of this ghastly system could God not have given us a better way to provide for food. Why torture others and then eat them. That is what animals do. I get very depressed when I think of this.

Well if the creature is no someone's food then that creature's population will increase too much that the resources will not be enough to sustain everyone. Cruelty is a concept of man and other creatures does not see it that way, they follow the law of nature. God is also a concept of man other creatures does really think about it.

My contention is why has this system been at all introduced. The powers that be could have thought of a better plan where there could have been tortureless, painless processes.

We cannot really completely comprehend "the powers that be". Who knows what really there plan is. And if they do really exist who are we really to question them.

God is all Knowing, and he placed the animals on earth in what we call the food chain. The reason animals live off each other is that there has to be a check on each species. In Canada right now, the Canada Goose is a protected species, and there is a growing problem of too many geese, because there are no checks! In the wild over time, each species was kept strong and healthy by the animals that fed off of it. This is God's plan, and the reason why wild animals have grown and prospered on earth.

I know it is God's plan but could God not have had a better plan where there would be no suffering, cruelty, fear, running for one's life, etc? God is all merciful. Is He not?

Have you not watched the Disney movie entitled The Lion King? There is an explanation there about all creatures existing in the circle of life. The grass is eaten by the antelope. The antelope is eaten by the lions. When the lions die, their carcasses fertilize the soil that grows the grass. Why? Because it is the way we exist on earth.

Yes. It is the way we exist on earth. Could there not have been a better way where we do not torture someone else to satisfy our hunger?

I think God had planned all this from the start. Well, there are people who don't wanna kill animals for eating that's why they just make themselves eat vegetables and call themselves vegetarians. It' really your choice if you don't wanna eat animals then you can go vegetarian too.

Whether it is me or you being a non vegetarian surely this is no way to satiate our hunger.

Its just life.. it's the natural cycle when something has to be made for the other.. like the food chain where has somthing has to be eaten and something will eat who has eaten i think God thought that things will be very tired if their life will continue and do nothing but their daily living.. About what you said about Cruelty, i think its not.. it just like we must sacrifice something for the better.. they are made for that.. Look at the food chain its just fair all of us will die.. where big things or those lving things who ate another smaller things will be eaten by bacteria and will be decompose, where the plant use it and the plant will grow that will be eaten by the one who is eaten at first.. Life is just wonderful if you look it that way.. What you see is not just that.. try understanding what happens after and realize what is the true essence of it.. :)

Your thought is based on what is already there. But this could have been different in the sense why should there be pain at all. Could there not have been any other way by which one could feed oneself?

There is a difference in killing for Bestial Greed as opposed to Bestial need. The Circle of life is actually needed to prevent over population. It would be far more cruel in my opinion for lifespans to be reduced to prevent the over population. And what would everyone eat anyways, it isn't any crueler to eat animals then it is to eat plants. Goodness knows there are plants that try to defend themselves same as there are animals.
