Do you have difficulty finding a job according to the course you graduated?

Out of curiosity, I want to know who here has a hard time looking for a job according to the course that they graduated to? I am a Journalism graduate here in the Philippines, so it is sort of under Mass Communication. There are not much media jobs here compared to other countries and it is quite frustrating. The job offerings here are more on call centers and IT jobs. For now, I am doing freelance writing in the internet while unemployed and somehow, I am having a bit of a hard time finding a job. If you experience this, what do you do? I try out different companies related to my field (SEO, media, etc.). I want to know your views on this. Thanks :)

Hi! I am a nurse but I am working in the BPO industry. Sadly, finding a job in the hospital is quite hard since there are a lot of nurses now. I am thinking of quitting my job right now and do some volunteer work if I don't get hired. That is why I am trying out ways on how to earn online to supplement my earnings. :)

Actaully, I read in the news that nursing is not the in-thing anymore in courses, but culinary arts because there are a lot of nurses already and, yes, it is very hard to find a job in the hospital. Volunteer work is good. How about applying in Red Cross? Or some NGOs? I know some people there, you might be interested :)

Yes, i'm even interested in a culinary course, just the basics of course. I still want to pursue my nursing career. Really? thanks for the info. I'll look into that. If you can provide additional info, that would be wonderful. thanks!

Hello ecyang. It is a sad fact that indeed, journalists here in the Philippines are not given as much attention if one cannot get into a media-related job. If you can't land on the newspapers or media networks, then you'll have to content yourself with jobs which are not really in line with the course that you took. I'm also a Mass Comm Grad from UP and I've had to content myself spending a lot of years on HR and Administrative work simply because I did not want to go into the more risky careers of journalists. Media careers pay well but the risks and the demands of the job are not really worth it -- at least from my perspective. But I have given all that up now -- I resigned from my latest job last March --, since I am already 43 and I have decided to go back into writing. I have since put up my own website, am now doing freelance writing jobs, and I could say that I am earning more in a month now than what I had been making monthly for the past 8.5 years. My advice to you though is to try to see if you can find a full-time job for the meantime. You are still young and you still have a lot of options. Also, try to be open-minded in learning new things. I, for one, did not have any formal training in computers, but look where I am working now. Too, don't ever get tired of reading, and when you get the chance, practice your writing skills so you won't forget the basics. Good luck my friend. I wish you well.

Thank you for your response, it has inspired me. I agree with you with the pay...I worked as a Program Researcher in one of the TV networks here and I was in the bottom of the food chain. The salary was not worth the risks and demands of the job and I resigned after almost 2 years. Plus no benefits. Right now, I am working as a Research Assistant under Dr. Jose Abueva for 6 months on his project. I plan to save up for a masters degree in Creative writing in UP. Yup, I am always reading and practicing my writing and have some freelance jobs too for extra income. Thanks for the advice! :D

I am an accountancy graduate here in the Philippines. I have not find difficulty in finding jobs related to accounting. There are lots of companies that are hiring accounting staff. I do admit that there is competition but it is not a problem. The only problem is with regard to the salary that they offer. It is not that much compared to working on business outsourcing companies.

I think it is the salary. Actually, I have seen some media jobs, but not as many as for those who graduated in accounting. And yeah, there is a problem to salary when it comes to media and writing jobs as they do not offer high salaries unless they are BPO or SEO companies. It depends on the companies themselves. I always keep on trying to find jobs everyday and I'm not stopping, but sometimes it gets frustrating since there are not as many jobs on media and writing.
