How many times have you heard that statement usually at the end of a story like ...we acccidentally bumped into each other purely by chance the we had dinner and then comes that familiar "the rest is history"... What does it all mean .I have an idea but I would love to hear your views

Haha..I've never really thought about what that means. I know I've said it once or twice, somebody will ask how I met my husband, I tell them the story then I'll say the rest is history..haha. What does it mean?

IMO it just means that time has passed and if the subject is famous then others know what happened from then until now. If the subject is just an ordinary person/subject/occurance then those people who are in the know or are familiar will know how the story ends.

I only use this phrase when the rest of the story Is hisrotic. Like 911. I could tell you the story of what happened to me that day and then at the end I could say the rest is history because you already know about the planes and the Towers. But when it comes to a lesser known story I find using the rest is history as a lazy move. Tell the rest of the story!

I don't really know what it means. Maybe they're saying, what usually happens in these situations happened to them.

I don’t know where the saying originated from but it is not exactly accurate if we are talking about ordinary events and not of any real historical value. I don’t use the expression often myself; I’ve used when I couldn’t be bothered repeating a story so I guess you could say it’s kind of lazy!
