There has been a lot of discussion about which is the best version of Roald Dahl's book Charlie and the Chocolate family - the one with Gene Wilder or the more recent one with Johnny Depp. Personally (although at times he reminded me of Michael Jackson) I thought that the Johnny Depp film was far more like the book than the earlier film. #What do you think?

I loved the Roald Dahl book! I watched the Johnny Depp version before I watched the Gene Wilder version. I was not impressed with Johnny Depp's version at all - I thought he was creepy and the movie overall lacked the same magic that the Gene Wilder version had. I admit Johnny Depp is a very good character actor, but I don't think he did Willy Wonka justice. If I was a kid, I'd be afraid of him in that movie. Of course, neither movie was better than the book!

PS. I just noticed you compared Johnny Depp's version to Michael Jackson and I remember thinking the same thing when I was watching the movie! Too funny.

I think Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka very well, and captures all the eccentric mannerisms of the character - although, yes, he did remind me a bit of Michael Jackson, but remember Willy Wonka was a genius, and so was Michael Jackson, it is all this little strange things about certain people that make them the genuis that they are...back to the Johnny Depp character, I think the thing about his perfect teeth was really funny but very apt to the backgound of the character too... :)

True, I'd never thought of that, the fact that his dad was the dentist. Depp is a fantastic actor though isn't he - I love his British accent!!

I love the Gene Wilder version but haven't yet seen the Johnny Depp film, although my kids have it on DVD.

the newer movie did miss a few valuable points that were in the book though it was more relevant to the book than the older one was. i also enjoyed the newer film because it had a touch of the modern world now

Films never catch everything from the book do they, but I do think the second was more like the book than the first
