Did you ever search for plans on the internet?

We're searching for woodworking plans for what the lady wanted on Sunday. She wants him to make a 3 tier plant holder. So far, I've found these:
www.popularwoodworking.com/article/Folding_Plant_Stand/
www.lowescreativeideas.com/idea-library/projects/Tiered_Plant_Stand_1007.aspx
http://www.woodworkersworkshop.com/store/Three_Tiered_Plant_Stand.html
They are the basic idea of what she showed us. The ones she showed us were antiques and made of really thick, sturdy wood. The half circle shelves look similar, but aren't as thick or as strong. The supports were really, really strong. Like supports on a stair case for each rung. So think thicker, heavier, sturdier, and with way more substantial internal supports. My husband is going to have to really modify these to make something like what she wants.
I'm worried that he'll make it and it will cost too much. Then she won't buy it. My brother made something for someone and it ended up costing more than the person was willing to pay. Wish she had given him a price range.
So have you ever searched for plans online? What kinds of plans did you search for? Did you find exactly what you wanted or "sort-of" with you having to make lots of modifications? Have you made anything similar to what my husband will try to make?

I did a searh a while back for shop plans for a helium article. Some of the sites had project plans as well. I think that your husband needs to have a clearly detailed contract with this lady and be sure she understands what the job calls for. She needs to put down a deposit before he even begins any work.

Yeah, at least a deposit for materials would be a help and a reassurance.

Yes, but he doesn't know what half is yet. He is looking for plans, wood, materials, etc.

I always do. Well, not for the woodworking, mostly for metal works. I recently search for plans for making some metal working tool, specifically to make circles with wires. Internet is great. I have found lots of help and I was able to implement them. Some are a bit shrouded with their knowledge, but if you search enough, you will find a person who is good enough to share his knowledge. I find that hobbyist websites are always helpful, manufacturing companied tend to hide bits and pieces, I don't blame them though. I find that most of the time I am unable to copy exactly, but I usually manage to get a workable one, taking hints from the plans found on the internet.
Have you finished the plant holder yet? If so, can you post a picture? I would love to see that.

He made his first "learning curve" one. Things are a little off center. We'll keep the first "out-take" one. He's got ideas on how to make it better.
He's talking about getting a digital camera for his work. Right now my only pictures online are through our scanner and the last time I tried to do that, I couldn't get it to "take" on mylot.

I like your response, I give it a big "plus". Sometimes my husband makes some of his own tools, too. I can't think of the names of them all, but I know that he makes at least 2. I think one is a jig and the other is a wooden mallet. He seems to need different jigs and mallets for whatever reason.

There is always some mistake made on the first time. To get things absolutely right, you need lots of experience and well, you need lots of time and money to get the exact things needed. I am sure he will get it right soon. Once you started, you find that there are rooms for improvement or some substitute that you can make. I find it really enjoyable. I even bought a small circle making machine from UK to get me started. It is necessary for me to make lots of jigs and tools as it is not easily available on the market.
As for jigs, you can never make enough if you are making different things.

True, we're still in the researching stage. Still trying to find plans, materials, cost of materials, how much time labor will be, etc. My husband says that if she doesn't buy it, then he'll keep it but it's large and we don't have much room. We'll see. I guess we could have more room if we rearranged some things and we have a rummage sale coming.
