my thoughts on hagar

I saw a painting from an Italian artist on antiques road show. It wasn't the best painting that I had ever seen of her. She was in the act of fleeing from Abraham and Sarah with Ismael. The problem was that Abraham had started to admire the child and hagar more and Sarah got jealous. Some Christians tend to put down both mother and child, but they were just as important as Isaac and Sarah. God gave them as much as he did Isaac and Sarah. He took care of them by giving them many nations and many ancestors. Doesn't it mean we as Christians should treat everyone with the amount of respect as God give us all?

We should indeed treat everyone with the respect God has given us. I think if we look back through scriptures we'll see jealousy in a lot of different ways. It was even jealousy that was behind the crucifixion of Jesus!

God had promised Abraham a son, a generation, and a generation as many as stars in the sky. Author of the book of Genesis says that Sarah scoffed at the idea because she was old. Only Sarah knew the truth. Circumcision was the remedy. Sarah herself had offered Hagar. Since Abraham was all too anxious to seal the covenant God had made with Abraham, he agreed. Miraculously Hagar conceived. She bore Ishmael and naturally, Abraham was delighted. He circumcised Ishmael. Later, Sarah too bore Isaac. Abraham circumcised him too. Ishmael was the precursor of Muslim race and Isaac became the precursor of the Jews. God came as His own son in Isaac's lineage. Ishmael’s descendants are still waiting. Why God treated Hagar differently, though Sarah had scoffed at the word God had given to Abraham? I feel because Sarah belonged to a Hebrew race whereas Hagar was not. God had chosen Hebrew race for salvation.
