Who do you think should pay for the Pope's UK visit?

The Pope - Who should pay for the Pope's UK visit?

Pope Benedict XVI will make the first papal visit to the UK since John Paul II's visit in 1982. This visit though will not come cheap; the total bill(not counting the cost of police and security )- is estimated to be a staggering £15m. £7m will come from the Roman Catholic Church, the rest will be shouldered by taxpayers. What do you think about this use of our money?

If I were the Pope(I hope not!) I would rather make a good cost to that millions, I rather give it to the poor who need it much.... just sharing..

Why is it costing so much? We have a lot of heads of state visit here and I doubt they run up that kind of bill to the taxpayer - of course they don't hold open air masses which is going to be the big expense. I do very much object to paying for other people to indulge in their religious choices like that. The Vatican Bank could pay for it - what with all the billions they've made out of arms and pharmaceuticals (including contraceptives). The taxpayers should only pay as much as any other head of a small state (say Latvia) would cost to look after.

The Pope is also a head of state. Taxpayers are paying for royal visits without complaining here, even if our royals went to the guillotine two centuries ago.
