To turn off or not to turn off

I am sitting here on my laptop, surfing the web and responding to Mylot comments. Outside the thunder is rumbling and the rain is pouring down. I am wondering how many of you turn your net off or just stay on until you have a power outage (if you do). I dont concern myself on the safety of this, as I dont see it as a hazard. So let me hear your side of this question.

I do turn off my net and sometimes even my computer when there is thunder and lightning. Once the lan chip on my motherboard got burnt due to lightning and I had to face a lot of problems. I do not want to take that risk anymore.

Wow, so you have had problems with the storms. Did it shock when it happened or was it just out?

I do not know what happened. I was not even in the house. My sister was using it and suddenly my computer shut down. And after that it did not start up. I had to check the parts and then took the motherboard to the service center. They pointed out that the lan chip was burnt. It meant I would not be getting any warranty. But at last I managed to get the warranty and got a replacement for my motherboard for free. So all was well in the end but had to go through a lot of trouble.

I never turn either my router or computer off when there is a storm. Never had any problem with anything happening and I am not worried about it either. However, I do know a few people that have had to get new routers after experiencing a power shortage in a storm and the hardware was damaged. This still does not phase me however and I am happy enough to take the risk.

I have heard from a friend that their computer actually ended up fried so they could no longer use it and had to replace it. This was caused by a power-surge.

I don't really turn my net connection off, unless and until there is a power cut. When there is one,I will have to switch off the entire system. Hopefully I have a UPS and inverter connection in my house. It helps me to work for a certain time even when there is no power. These power cuts are quiet frequent in my place specially when there is any storm or any other bad climatic condition..

thanks for responding. Our satellite is like that. If it even thinks that rain will come then it will go out. It really is less often that the power goes out. I have wireless but my router is powered by power supply so, that makes my internet go out.

I do not turn my computer off if there's a storm. Like you I do not see it as a hazard. (I hope that they're not famous last words, however; as it's starting to rain!)

There is not much of a problem like that where I am. In fact, I will be happy to get a bit of rain. The heat is killing me. Like you, I don't see any point in turning off the net because of thunder and rain. I usually stay on. But then, I haven't faced any problem because of it.

I don't turn my net off. Like you I don't know any hazard in not turning my net off when there is thunder and rain.

I am glad I have not seen a hazard so far, as when its raining many times my satellite will go out. So the internet helps the time go by since you have to stay in the house.

I live in Southern California and here we don't get any thunder and lightning. So, that is not something I have to worry about. Thank goodness. Stay safe, my friend. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

I turn off and unplug my computer when there's a thunderstorm at home, but not usually when I'm at the library. A neighbor has gotten their computer struck by lightning more than once, so I won't risk losing my computer. Actually the one I have used to be at our neighbor's house, and it got hit once, but only the internet moden got fried and the computer was fine. I don't like taking the risk, as I cannot afford to replace my computer.

you don't need to turn off your net.. don't worry you won't be strike by thunder.. you just need to turn it off if you are using a DSL connection which has a signal receptor in you roof, because there's a possibility that when its been strike by thunder you pc or laptop will be damage too, but i think you are using a WIFI connection so you don't need to turn it off.
