Teaching Myself to Write a How-to or Self-Help Book

What should I teach myself to do in order to start writing a 100,000-word book? Hmm. Start with what you know and proceed from there. Small incremental steps will evolve a piece of writing towards its goals. Right now, I need to write about "word count" and explain this concept to an aspiring writer. One idea. 1,000 words. How do I proceed? Start off with a categorical statement. You need to know about word count and appreciate its contribution to success of the entire book project. Without a clear idea of its purpose, the overall goal of the project becomes indeterminate and the schedule susceptible to delays. Hmm. I have chapter one of my book.

Most people will only tell you what works for them when it comes to writing a large amount of material. If you wish to write an article about how writers can increase their word count to a specific amount, incorporate ideas about how the writer can conduct research, interviews with qualified people about the topic, or brainstorm ideas using elements that correlate to but are not exactly the topic. Word count is essential in any project for the writer needs to know on a day-by-day basis how to plan the story and how to keep at it. Research, think and try to think about it when you are not writing. Those things will help narrow the scope of your topic.

Word count is more than just the number of words in a particular piece of literature. It is an important measure of quality by which the writer, publisher and literary agent coordinate their individual work. In the quest to join the publishing industry, it is even more important that the aspiring writer develop respect for this metric because it is the lever for developing writing talent. Hmm. I should write faster.

Thanks for activating my online workspace. Now, I can continue writing the first chapter of my book. If you'll excuse me, I have 1,000 words to write about "word count" and what it is.

I'm still working on my system. By next week, I'll be able to discuss specific solutions to the problem of writing and publishing a book.

...Hi bloggeroo, Writing means just that I think, you have to write. Whatever your subject is write it down, and then write ten more ways to say the same idea in a different way. This is for the exercise of writing. Take those ten ways you wrote about your subject, put them on one blank piece of paper each. Put them all aside. then go back a little later, take each sheet and write everything you can about the title of that page. Do this with each of the ten pages, day by day. Now, take your original title and start to outline what you wish to say chapter wise. Then fill in your outline chapter by chapter. Next those ten pages should be read and whatever is revelant to the chapters that you wrote should be incorporated. Pull it all together, once again put it down, come back later and add what you feel needs to be added, using a 1, 2, 3 or a, b, c note system within the body of your work. Then write it up or type it up completely, refine it and review it. If satisfied you have your book if not, do the steps you feel are necessary to complete it. Hope this helps. Good luck please let me know when you have published your creation. You can and will be able to do it. Take good care.

I'm writing about an innovative system for how to write and publish a book. Applying what I know about engineering to publishing work is going to be a challenge, but so far (after a year of thinking about the problem), the idea still looks promising. So right now, it's just a matter of proving whether my ideas work or not.

Word count can really make a beginning writer feel obliged or strapped. Like there's this site that obliges writers to submit their articles according to a certain number of words. It never accepts articles that do not follow the word count rule. Well maybe the purpose is to set a standard or fairness as some writers have the tendency to just submit articles without exhausting all the possibilities one can write about a certain idea.

Word count is just a quality metric. As an engineer, I'm accustomed to using numbers to guide me in my work. So, using numbers in monitoring/managing my work as a writer is not that problematic. Besides, I already have a first hand appreciation for word count when I wrote a lotto primer a few years back because I personally copy fitted my writings to the target paper. And I learned that those pieces that are over the desired word count do pose problems for the editor. They have to be rewritten. Those that come under the target word count is easily solved by using fillers.

When writing a book it is always a difficult balancing act between discipline and free expression. Most people, especially novice writers, need to plan carefully. They need to write a detailed synopsis with chapters clearly defined. They then know how many words, approximately, per chapter. In this way they can decide how many words they need to give to each component/incident/scene-setting/character description etc. This gives a framework for the book. However, sometimes, when writing, the author realises that some parts need to run on while others need to be tightened up. Even so, they should always keep the framework in mind.

Hmm. I can link the concept of "word count" to other concepts. I can express a page of a book in terms of word count. I can express a chapter of a book in terms of word count. I can express a working day in terms of word count. And of course, I can express readability in terms of word count. There must be other concepts I can use with word count. I must do some research at this point.
