Hi Mylotters!! I was wondering about it. How many of you like visiting zoo's??? I don't like going to the zoo. In fact I don't like to watch caged birds or animals. It is really painful when you think about the situations, they are going through. So,what about you all??? Kids find it very interesting as they can watch different types of animals over there including the wild ones. But,do you like visiting the zoo's ?? Please share your views and opinions. Happy Mylotting!

When I was a child, going to the zoo was great. Now, there are just certain things about it that feel rather uneasy about certain animals being taken out of their natural habitats and taken to the zoo. There are just times where you just wonder what means it took to get them there. It is really something to keep you up at night. I am sure that most of them are well care of. Then there are those that might not be. I imagine some zoos do have a dark side that most of the general public does not think about. It is bound to happen. We see there, we look at the animals to get our entertainment but we move on with the rest of the day. I do think that the animals could not like being caged. I mean, we would not like being caged if we were put in a zoo. Still if the animals are well cared for, than my mind is put somewhat at ease. I think the vast majority of them are. Still, I would be foolish to think that there is not a dark side to the treatment of these animals. I mean, there are stories about circus animals and the treatment they go through at times.

Circus is the another place where animals are tortured severely for the sake of earning money.I also like to see these animals in their natural habitats. Nice post. Thanks,Meg!

Excuse me? A dark side? Being a zoo employee of three years I can guarantee there is no dark side to zoos. People who think this should be bowing down and kissing our feet for the fact that we have the ability to conserve endangered animals that you would otherwise never see in your life time. Do you have any idea what it takes to work in a zoo? I work 11 hour days of intense physical labor and constant care and observation of the animals I take care of to make sure they get the proper care that they deserve. Also, animals in zoos are not removed from the wild... we didnt strip them from their "families" and place them into jail cells. These exhibits are their homes, like your house is to you. Removing them and placing them in the wild would be committing murder because none of them would be able to survive. Before going and listening to any "stories" how about to talk to a dedicated member of a zoo staff who has committed their lives to the well being of these animals.

I like to visit the zoo because i can see animals that i normally would not see. At least they are now building a somewhat natural habatate. Some of these animals would probably already be extinct with out the zoo or other kind of protection. I do at some point of that zoo visit think of how sad it is that they are in these inclosers. I have also wondered about seditives that may be given to some of the more dangerous animals. Ive seen some pretty abnormal behavoural habits some of them have. Once while i was watching the gorillas. The big male kept doing the same thing over and over. He would throw up, scoop it up and eat it, Sit a few min then repeat the whole thing like a broken robot. Poor thing.

Ya. Once while visiting a zoo in another city we lived in when my kids were small. It was so crowded we could not get up close to see. For once i was glad about that. The big male did a bowel movement into his hand and flung it into the crowd. Two times. Then almost everyone left. Then my kids and i was able to get up front to see them. We stayed near the corner in case he wasnt done yet we could quickly move around the corner.

The notion of animals in cages bothers me, but as we mature, somewhat, and try to provide more 'natural' habitats for our caged critters it shows that we are growing away from our need to manipulate (and destroy) the habitat for our own insensitive reasons...Yes, they are still in cages but in some instances those in cages are the only representatives of that creature, the ones in the wild being dangerously underpopulated or extinct altogether. Where then would we be? And who would we be to just sit back and watch another species disappear inhumanely to allow them to live free of cages? Cages, even when as large as habitats, may seem inhumane but provide us with portions of our environment that may otherwise not be at all...Enjoy!

It is not only in the zoo that we see animals in cages or are tied with short ropes. I see a lot of them in our neighborhood and I feel bad about these animals who do nothing but sit and bark 24/7. What a pity.

I do like visiting zoos because they can do a lot of good these days. Our local zoo is Bristol Zoo (in England) and if you check out its website, you will see it is involved in many conservation and breeding projects to help with rare species. The animals also have big enclosures and a lot of effort and money is spent to give them a natural area and as big as they can manage. Of course, I would hate to see big animals in tiny cages as happened in zoos here in the 1970s and 1980s, but these days they are much better and I think they should be applauded for their work.

I find it sad to see animals caged and peering out looking miserable or acting out angrily. Luckily, a lot of zoos are doing away with cages and have the animals in a more natural situation.

I love animals and I love visiting the zoos. I haven't visited one in a long time. The nearest one is in Birmingham, Alabama and I'm 43 miles northwest of there. I guess, when I really think about it, I like to see animals in their natural habitat. If I really want to see any wild animals, I would have to go to the zoo, though.

the reason why i like to go to the zoo is for me to see different kind of animals as i did not normally see around the corner. besides i guess its just alright if they are inside the cage as its for our own safety also, we cant really say of how can animal will give us harm no matter how good or nice they are as theres still a tendency that they will react differently that might cause harm to us. besides they are very well treat inside like food. though of course its still nice to see them freely in the forest but still they are not safe there coz of hunting. so as long as they are healthy and alive then its alright.

When I was in school and was a student, I have visited zoo. But I really don't like to be around due to many reasons. We infringe their freedom and we are exploiting them. I don't know what about your country. At least for my country, I am not supporting for it. Best regards, Thank-s

I only visit zoos where the animals are kept in areas that are made to resemble their natural habitat as much as possible, where they have space and the same kind of surroundings that they would experience in the wild. It means that sometimes you have to wait ages to catch a glimpse of them as they may be on the far side of their area or shading / snoozing behind undergrowth or trees but I think that's a price worth paying to see them relaxed and bahaving in similar ways to how you see them on Discovery channel in their natural habitat..

I agree with you. Here in Phoenix our wildlife zoo has sheep that actually live in the mountain. They aren't really IN the zoo, like caged, they live in the mountains near the zoo and you can see them from there when they come out. So that is definitely a nice experience to see native wildlife.

Here is the things about zoos. I work in a zoo and have been for the last three years. Zoos don't just go around removing animals from the wild and throw them into cages. They are not going thru any "situations" in fact, most zoos have enrichment programs designed specifically for each type of animal to meet their needs. Zoo staff are required to have college degrees, or be enrolled for an animal related program of study. Zoos provide the world with some of the greatest breeding and conservation programs anyone could ever dream of. They pay ecologists to travel around and observe the habitat and behavior of endangered species so that they can maintain successful breeding programs and reintroduce these species into the wild. Zoos provide the public with a learning experience that they might otherwise never get. How many of you think you would have had the chance to see lions, elephants, monkeys, or any other kind of wild animal without have the privilege of visiting a zoo? Before bashing zoos and thinking that they are terrible things, consider the hard working people that have a passion for giving these creatures a good life and preserving their natural habitat.

Many zoos today are less about showing off the animals and more about helping animals. Here in Arizona the Phoenix wildlife zoo does everything from rehabilitation, mating programs, raising animals to be released into the wild, and just taking care of animals that can't be returned to the wild. If it weren't for the fact that they are there to help animals I would feel bad about seeing the animals locked up. But if you read up on the zoo they actually have these programs and the zoo is really about helping the animals. Having the facility as a zoo provides the zoo with an income. But the animals aren't just caged so they can be shown off like many years ago when zoos were created for that purpose. I love animals, so as long as the profits go to the zoo and the zoo is treating the animals well and actually helping wildlife with their programs then I am fine with going and consider my money as going to a good cause.

I do not really see much of a problem with animals being caged, I mean they are animals and it's not like they are WAYYY less happier unless they are being mistreated they are fine with it.

I've never been to a zoo and would not really want to go there. My cousins and siblings all love going to the zoo. I hate seeing caged animals. However, there's one place I'd really want to see. I want to go to Calauit Island in Palawan, Philippines. They say there's a lot of wild animals there. It's like a small Africa. It's a man made Savannah. The animals are not caged but people who would be visiting there need to be in caged. To be able to tour the island you will have to ride in what seems to be like a cage for humans. This is to make sure the animals will not be able to hurt anyone since they are all free to roam in the island.

Hi tuyakiki, i like to watch animals but not in the cage. I will go to zoo to show the animals to my son. He only knows pet animals, wild animals i will be showing in the discovery channel, planet animal channel but to see personally i will take him to the zoo. I feel happy when i see them, but i feel there will be not having their complete caring or freedom. The place may not be suitable for them in the zoo. I feel unnecessary they are arrested for nothing. What is their mistake to be there in the zoo. Animals are nature's gift.

honestly, I really do not like seeing animals confined in cages. I think, they feel sick and depressed because he could not free to go anywhere. about the zoo, I thought it was not too bad for them. because it will protect them from extinction. I do not like seeing animals caged and confined in a cage. however, every creature need freedom
