Leftover food - Your leftover food could still be able to feed one hungry child in poor countries.

Hello mylotters, I have this habit of not leaving any leftover rice or viand in my plate every meal. I make sure I only take what I could consumed. It's one of the trait I got from my father too. What prompted me more to practice such habit when I attended a conference about HUNGER around the world especially in poor African countries. In every single grain of cooked leftover rice when you gather it all together from people around the world it will still be able to feed more than a dozen hungry children, and will relieved them from dying due to hunger. We are so lucky that we can have our meals 3 times a day and in between snacks as much as we want to. So do you have a habit of leaving foods in your plate every after meals? What do you do with your leftover?

Ever since I'm a pup my father would teach me not to waste any thing that is edible because he said everything we have on the table is something that others used their time and effort to bring about. That's why I never leave food in my plate, I would finish everything up. But then one day, whilst attending a presentation regarding dining etiquette I heard a whole new story. According to the presenter, it is not polite to finish everything up, there's must be something left on the plate. I was so dumbfounded when I heard this, because it is so contradictory to what I was taught. So it got me thinking after that, here I am doing all I can not to waste the food and at the other half of the globe, they are leaving food stuff behind just to be polite??!!What the.. But in the end I just tell myself I'm happy doing what I do and I surely don't want to give a damn to this kind of etiquette, I would rather please myself then others, after all we can never please everyone.Cheers.

Hello ohiocy, that is so nice to know. I learned also from one of our subject in school regarding table etiquette but as much as I wanted to I can't bare to leave any food at all, so everytime I attended some gatherings I take something which have bones that will be left at my plate lol.

Hi Sheanne, I really appreciate your awareness about this subject. Please motivate this concept wherew ever you go. Even I have the same habit that there won't be any leftover at my plate in my meal plate. I used to have small arguments on this at home. I hate to seeing the wastage of food. I used to advice people about the importance of food and insist children to make a habit of serve only what they can eat at one time. Even public gatherings like, wedding, parties and b'day celebrations and mainly at hotels, if we see, it is horrible that people's habit of eating. Even if they are spending on the food, they were not bothered. Regards, Thank-s

Hello thanks, thank you so much. Actually I always remind my relatives even to my friends about not leaving food in their plate. It's really so sad that in some gatherings you can find lots of leftover when in fact it can still feed lots of hungry mouths. I'm glad you also do the same just like med, kirthy and p3. Thank you for sharing.

I dont leave anything on my plate when I eat something. I was always taught by my dad never to do that even if some people would say it has something to do with etiquette. I always make sure nothing is left on the plate unless its the bone of something. lol

We are definitely one and the same. I learned this habit from my mom who always reminds us (until now) to always finish everything on our plate by getting only what we can eat. Having leftovers on your plate meant that you are throwing away God's blessing to you. Whatever leftover we have on the dining table, we keep it in the fridge to become part of our meal the following day or we give it away for somebody else to consume. There are millions of people who eat out of garbage cans due to poverty so we should learn to appreciate what we have whether it is barely enough or in abundance. I'm teaching this to my kids and I hope they get to teach their kids when the time comes.

I rarely leave food on my plate, but when I do it is given to the dog :) This is alright, as it means that we often don't have to feed him his own food if we have enough leftovers from our own meals. If you are finding that you are leaving food, then you should learn to cook yourself smaller portions. Some people have small appitites, whereas other people could happily eat three or four times the amount that the average person eats. Everyone is different, but you have to adapt to whichever person you are.

I also don't like to leave food in my plate. I like to finish whatever I take for eating. I will leave only if I don't really like the food. There are lots of poor people in my country who struggle even to make one meal a day. So, it is not advisable for me to waste food. I will be noticed by god for doing such a mean act. I am not a picky eater too.

I had this habit until I met my boyfriend who likes to eat everything in his plate, he will not leave anything else in the plate so I learn to be a good eater like him too with time, my grandma says that we should not leave food in the plate because there are people out there who does not even have this to eat so better respect the food and try to eat what we have asked for. Even if there are leftovers still in the plate, my dogs get it or my cat.

I think the habit of leaving foods in plate every meals is a very bad habit, food tastes good, it's hardship for farmer, so waste is degrading.

my grandfather trained us from very early on not to leave even a morsel of food on our plates. we grew up watching him clean off his plate so that it looked like it had not been used! so i only take want i know i can consume; i've passed this on to my children. it's really amazing to see how much left-over food gets thrown away when there are a lot of people going hungry.

no, i don't have that habit because when i was a kid, my grandma always make sure that we get only food that we can eat, if we get more, we should finish it. no leftovers on plate.

I actually purposely don't leave food on my plate, but I usually do because I can't eat it all. Especially when I go out to restaurants. The portions are so big, I take the leftovers home with me and have it as another meal. Hey, I get two meals for the price of one! Who can beat that? (:
