What does LCD stand for?

What is the meaning of this abbreviation? What stands inside the words that describe it? Why do we call it LCD TV?

It means Liquid Crystal display....The display seen is because of light falling on the particles..
I have always wanted to break open an lcd monitor LOL..

Liquid Crystal Display. Literally it contains liquid crystal. So if you have seen a broken LCD TV or monitor you will probably notice a liquid like substance inside of it. Or just try press gently on your lcd tv. See the water-like reaction? That's the Liquid Crystal.
