I was looking for tourist places on the net the other day and I saw a title on the Philippine Tourism site that said 'National Food: Sinagang' Is this true? Is it no longer lechon?

How could they say that sinigang is the national food in the philippines, because in the history Lechon is our national food and in fact sinigang is only common in Luzon specially in Manila and it is not common Visayas. but lechon is everywhere.

Cebu lechon, i love, i love, i love! But, i think lechon is a chinese influence. i'm not so sure but i think i heard that somewhere in high school philippine history, which was a long, long time ago lol. but, i agree that sinigang is not as common as lechon.

Hmmm ... For me, I still consider Lechon as the National food. I know that roasted pigs are found in some countries but nobody does it better than Filipinos especially the ones cooked in Cebu! Yummy!!!

i have no idea, for me i still go for lechon as national food coz in every occasion specially in the provinces like fiesta theres always lechon. while not all party nor fiesta have sinigang. i do love sinigang since it becomes the common filipino food and easy to prepare, but i still prefer lechon to be known as national food.

hello ddaguno....its good u brought out this topic.just recently i saw it was feature in a national television about "SINIGANG" As far as i remember it was not posted that our national food is Lechon. If you look at the poster in schools specially in Grade School. I think Lechon was never a national food because only few people eat Pork lechon though we can serve Chicken,Cow,and others. Sinigang is now considered as National Food because, this is very common to filipinos.everything is in it. You have the soup, the vegetables,meat,fish... If you are very observant sinigang is a common dish whether you are rich or poor.....

For the national food I'd go for sinigang. Well, I really don't eat sinigang but I guess it could be better than lechon, because most foreigner's especially the american's find the dish disgusting. I remember, I went into a fiesta and there was an american and he was like throwing up to see the "whole" pig on the table. Or maybe, lechon could probably be a good national food just as long as we chop it into small pieces before serving or taking pictures of it. LOL

I never knew that we have a national food, and if you ask me, the first thing that would come to my mind is actually Adobo. I mean, I think it's the most famous, and most loved of all the local dishes that we have right? ... I wonder how do they come up with this National thing, is there a voting or something that we can participate in?..

i'm not sure, all i know is other country had also way of cooking pork similar to lechon and they put some stuff like herbs/spices/vegetables inside the whole roasted pork, yah! i believe sinigang is now our national food, unfornately i'm not a big fan of sinigang, i only eat sinigay if sour flavoring came from the realy sampaloc (unripe tamarind) or calamansi (lime)for fish..

i think it's because of the availability of the food. lechon is available only here in the philippines but not all filipinos ca eat lechon specially the poor ones. that statement, that sinigang is the national food of the philippines is based on a survey. sinigang is eaten by the rich and the poor. everyone can have that even daily unlike lechon. and i thought that the philippine tourism didn't say that sinigang is the national food but rather it is the most favorite dish of pinoys.

Can't believed that sinigang is the National dishes of Philippines , supposed to be ADOBO because Pinoy here in Canada and USA are longing for Adobo.

I thought lechon originated from Spain and not of the Philippines, correct me if I'm wrong please. I have always beent thinking that adobo was the all time Filipino dish until I learned from Jessica Soho's show that sinigang is the favorite of most Filipinos.

It's not adobo? LOL! Adobo is my favorite. As to sinigang and lechon, well I didn't even know there was a national food. But if sinigang is what the Philippine Tourism site says IS the national food, maybe it is. Maybe a little research on the matter is needed. I think that there would be issuances on the matter, either by the office of the president or the department of tourism or other department/s covering culture or national heritage or something.

Well i think Lechon is still the National food. it's what people have known. though i prefer sinigang more. Maybe it's just that a lot of people are craving in sinigang now than lechon and that's what made others think that sinigang is the national food now.

NO to Lechon - Roasted Pig on the Plate
I think Adobo is the national food of Filipinos. But if the Philippine Tourism chose Sinigang then it is okay for me too. But lechon? No! I don't eat roasted pig or any other pork dish at all. With adobo I can use chicken and with sinigang I can also use either chicken or fish or shrimp but pork sinigang certainly I will not eat.

hi ddaguno, I have read it in Philippine Daily Inquirer last 2 weeks ago.It was featured there & they actually included lots of different Filipino dishes & ask several people what do they prefer & majority answered "Sinigang". I do eat sinigang but If I have to choose,I would vote for either lechon or adobo. As lechon & adobo are cooked in the whole country the same way unlike sinigang which is cooked differently. Each provinces has their own way of cooking sinigang. But it was already voted so there's nothing we can do..yes dear it's true.have a great day!

I dont know. But if I were to choose I think I will choose lechon, because I dont think all islands in the Philippines love sinigang, but I am pretty sure that provinces and cities here in the Philippines love lechon. In fact whenever there is an occasion we cook lechon, not sinigang.

really?! but it is true, i will not go against it because i so love sinigang. i can consume many cups of rice when sinigang is on our table. i think sinigang also deserves to be a national food because it is indeed one of a kind recipe that the other countries cant copy. only our Filipino mothers can cook mouth watering sinigang. but of lechon still our national food, it is still delicious but for sure it will get me fat :) Eat Healthy, stay healthy :)

Maybe its true. Because sinigang can be an everyday meal even for those in the poberty area. There are lots of sinigang to choose from like sinigang na bangus sa miso, sinigang na baboy, sinigang na isda sa bayabas or santol; and many more.Unlike lechon, who can afford to buy lechon for an ordinary day. Infact, I can only eat lechon when there is a big celebration like wedding, birthday debut or in town fiesta.

But Adobo is not originated from Philippines.Spaniards bought it to Philippines when they Arrived. In the real Adobo, they put so much olive oil in the Adobo, they put it on a jar, they put more spices. Its very spicy.my Grandma is a Spanish..she told me that.
