I am trying to consider applying at a call center

Philippines

My mother works in Europe and there's a recession there so we could no longer afford to let me continue my studies since I have 2 more siblings. One in college like me and another still in high school. If I wanted to pursue my studies, I have no choice but to stop for a year, find a job for a while and save money. This is my first time to apply ever so I'm quite nervous. Any tips my fellow mylotters? Thanks

The best thing you can do is to be yourself, and show ambition... I think that a lot of employers out there enjoy to see someone that has ambition rather than someone who is just looking for a job to get by. Make sure when you go to an interview, you introduce yourself, and show yourself as someone who is willing to work hard. I do not recommend that you tell possible employers about your plans of stopping education for a year, because they generally would like to have someone who is going to be comitted, however what you choose to do after you get the job is your choice entirely, it just looks better if you show willing to work. Also if there is something that you do not understand about the job then you should ask questions. If you are looking for a job that does not really require too many qualifications... I would choose something like a shop assisstant in either a supermarket or small shop or like a smaller convieniance shop or like your title here a call centre, is also a good place to start, and also remember that every job that you have will all be experience and added qualifications in your future, so once you have a jon your next employer can see that you have worked and have some experience etc and it will go on. It is always hard to begin a new job, a bit like starting a new school, making friends and learning, just be yourself and you will be fine. Good Luck!!!!!

I am very much willing to apply at fast food chains but my mother won't allow me since the very fact that I'm stopping disheartened her already so she wanted me to work somewhere I could use my skills. Thanks for your response rosie. Have a great day ahead!

i think, you just have to believe in yourself and show them what you've got. but don't brag so much, know what to say and at the same time be teachable. i was nervous too on my interview before but being accepted in the job had my self-confidence boosted. i may share to you a job opportunity but may i know first your course and school?

Sorry to hear that you need to stop studying and work to help your family out. I've read that you're from the Philippines. I am from the Philippines too. I've been working in BPO industry for over 5 years now. I remember the first time I applied; what they gauge is your conversational English, they need to see you if you can understand English- of course you need to understand the customers clearly and exactly in order for you to address their needs. 2nd- if you can be understood- how you pronounce words, 3rd- your conversational structure- basically, how you construct your sentences, correct grammar and tense, and lastly, your conversational style- how professional you are, your tone of voice, and inflections. Once you pass these, and you get hired- you will undergo with product training- before rendering phone time, you must be knowledgeable about the product you are supporting- whether you're a technical support representative, billing, or financial specialist. I hope you find contact center that will make you feel comfortable. Of course, it is not easy to work on a contact center as you follow the time of the the country you are supporting. Say, you're supporting US/Canada- they're 12 hrs delayed of us, so that means you need to work at nights. If UK you have to work mid- shifts (afternoon until hours after midnight). Try to find some Australian accounts, so you can work during the day.

Oh I see. Australian accounts. Hmm, anyway I don't see any problem working on graveyard shifts since I'm very used to sleeping late. XD Besides, I could have all the free time I could ever have since I won't be studying anymore. Thanks for your response my_january. Your post really helps.

theres nothing impossible about it just make sure you have patience in your job and in your ambition. used to work as a call center before and at the same time took up my second course, i work 9pm-6am then go to school at 7am-12pm i got home around 2pm and i sleep wake up around 7pm. everyday i only sleep 5 hours a day though saturday and sunday since i dont have work and school i sleep the whole day. its so tired really but sometimes i make an absent in school and my professors and classmate are good enough to provide me the lecture for the day then i only go to school if theres important activity like exams. my manager was also understandable to give me a fixed schedule at work. though just make sure to be regularize first before you enrolled as if they found out that you study they will finished your contract, but if you want you can just concentrate to work and save your money though if you work in call center as theres too many activity i cant tell if you really can save your money. but if you have ambition then just think that what you do is for your won sake. goodluck

Wow I admire you for being so diligent and hardworking. Being a student requires me so much time already because I used to be an IT student. Finishing the laboratory exams and programs won't give me enough sleep already so I can't really study while working. Moreover, you're so lucky to have an understanding manager.

I think that is a nice thing to do, to help your family and understand your situation. Your mother is lucky to have a daughter who thinks so maturely, not many children think that way. I guess I understand why you are nervous, i think it is always normal for people trying to apply for a job, and especially to those first timers. Before you apply, it's best to first know the company that you are applying, this will also help during the interview. Just be confident and pray to God to have a successful application and that He will guide you on what to do.

Hi Saranggola, Yes this recession has taken its toll all over. I would if I were you just apply around wherever you could and accept work with whoever might be hiring. You say you are considering a Call Center. I've never done that work but it is a job. Just be yourself and take whatever is offered you if you are lucky enough to have anything offered you. Jobs are really scarce about now.

Hello KITE, well, the best thing you should do when you are interviewed is answer immediately, don't stutter, don't pause for long and never say "uhm" at all. i don't know about three years ago but you can't be shy in the interview because they are looking for your confidence and your proficiency in speaking ENGLISH. not to mention your ability to answer problems quickly as there are also Call Simulations in the interview process. PRACTICE SPEAKING IN ENGLISH, TALK to the MIRROR and make sure you have time to check proper pronunciation of words.

I dont know if this will help you as the interview process might be different but depending on the type of call center you are applying for then it might. In my interview it was focused on your questioning and answering skills, so that you can try to overcome any objections that the customers have. They also wanted to see how you put the customer first and when selling something you question them to find something that will benefit them. They were understanding as I told them that I was a bit nervous and they said thats to be expected. What I do before any interview is to do a bit of research on the company, search them online and look for any forums where people who work for the company work. Find out what exactly they do, if it sells something then find out about the different products they sell. I actually checked the rival company deal as well so in the interview I could say "I think the deal I saw is better than the one offered by _______ because of this reason". Also if its a big company then you might find people writing about their interviews, so try doing a search for "interview with (name of company)", I did this once and actually got asked the same questions as someone posted, I dont ever expect to be asked the same but sometimes its helpfull just to know the types of questions. I know it can seem like a lot of work for an interview but it helps if your prepared as you feel a bit more confident, and if you do the work then it usually shows them that you are serious.

Where are you from? If you are from the Philippines you should look for call centers who accept people w/o experience because I know some who don't. Call centers don't accept candidates below 18. But you might get hooked to the call center life then you wouldn't want to go back to college anymore. A better move would be to apple for a scholarship or be a working student. If it can be helped you shouldn't stop your studies.

Yes I am from the Philippines. I'm already 19 and somehow I've finished my second year in college which makes me qualified for one of the most call centers' requirements.

Well, you can always try a lot of jobs. The call canter pays okay but you get stress out and tired. And not to mention, your immune system is gona be weakened. There are several job openings available. There is ESL you teach english to foreign individuals like koreans and japanese. The best thing you can do is to act yourself. Good luck to you! Happy Mylotting!

It seems we belong to the same country Saranggola. I also want to apply in a call center here in Cebu, wanna try the life! The tips members gave you could help. For me, I guess on applying on every kind of job, you just need to boost your confidence, once you're confident enough, you can go through all those questions in the interview and get the job as easy as it was just grabbing a candy out of it's wrapper. WISH YOU LUCK! I was also nervous at my first job interview in an English Korean School. Went on the job but it was just part time.*wink

Hi, My opinion is that taking up a call center job would change your life style in the negative sense. If your employer requires you to work in the night shifts, things get worse. You are still young and you do have several other options. Working at a call center for a couple of pennies would'nt solve your problems as such. Re-Consider your plans to join a call center job.
