now I've known how to drive for half my life already! (gosh I feel old!) But today I was taking my hubby to work for a meeting/company event he had at work... and there was a classroom full of grade school age kids crossing the road. It is a 4 lane road w/ a parking lane. Now how would you handle things if the light changed and they were not done crossing? Would you not wait til the last child had stepped on the curb? We were in the turning lane to go left so they had passed us however, the lanes to go fwd they were still crossing. But a car decided he was going to sit in the middle of the intersection crawling tward the kids because the light had turned green!
Why not wait til the kids had all passed? Was this person in such a rush they'd endanger a school group??!?!?! WYT?

It sounds to me like the guy had no common sense. There are some kids around here though that take their time crossing the street on purpose just to make you wait. Those kids( about 12) make me want to run them over. Not that I ever would, but still...

I know whatcha mean it's not usually the kids here it's the seniors on their scooters or whatever shuffling across the road. There's a man that "drives" thru by my DC's school and he bout scares the snot outta cause he's in the road on his scooter & there are sidewalks.

I've seen this before. In Phoenix the cars would honk and barely miss the stragglers, not caring about their safety. Here in Ohio, people wait till the children are out of the road. Just another reason why I love being home!
People are in too much of a hurry. And for what?! Nothing important, when you think about what is really important in life. A child's life is like a diamond, your corporate meeting or shopping trip is crap compared to that.

I've seen this when I was in Chicago visiting. The cab drivers were literally honking their horns at pedestrians.. I was thinking WTF?!?!? it's a pedestrian city more people walk cause parking is expensive & limited.

there's a school near me and i see this all the time.
tho to be fair, they don't want to stop for anybody, let alone kids.
the one time a guy blazed right by me while crossing my mom with a cop sitting right there.did the cop move? no.
i went up to the cruiser and said "did you not #$%^!!ing see that!?
god forbid i interrupted his sandwich.
some people are just self important jerks that don't stop unless they see a sign with their name on it.

yeah I'd wait, even if I wasn't on the near end by the children...

I used to get compliments on my kids ability to say "please" & "thank you" now the rest of their manners we are working on.

There's the problem, there's a shortage of common sense in this world, manners too!

First of all, I've known since I was a child that pedestrians have the right of way.
Second of all, I tend to be very polite to pedestrians, especially in harsh weather. I've been where they are.. trying to get out of the rain or snow or cold or whatever and the drivers won't let me cross.. and I thought to myself "Sure, what do you care? You're in a nice, warm, dry car.. why should you care that I'm out here in the elements soaked and freezing?" So unless I'm in an extreme hurry then I'd let them pass even if I'm holding up traffic myself. It's just curtious.
Now as for this idiot inching towards the kids.. well obviously he's in an extreme rush, but really... if he hit one of those kids he'd be held up a whole lot longer than if he'd just wait for them to finish crossing. It's like speeding when you're late for work... getting pulled over will only make you later, so do the speed limit!!

Plus it's a law here that if a pedestrian is in the crosswalk you have to stop for them. Rather than let them dodge all the cars.
I agree about that too... I'd rather let someone get by in bad weather too so they can get to where they are going faster. I recall walking home in cold temps & snow home from HS. Even had to take the longer routes because the short cuts were too deep with snow.
It's not worth not letting them all finish crossing before starting into the intersection. SO what if the light for us turned green! The group started crossing long before the light changed so just wait that extra minute, no biggie.

The only state I know that is pedestrian friendly is California. If someone hits you there, they have to pay for all the person's damages. However, I hear the buses in England don't stop and will just go ahead and hit you and keep on going.

We have a state law that of course was unknown til they started posting it around highly visable and used areas like by the court house and a college that the pedestrians have the right of way as long as they are in a cross walk you HAVE TO STOP!
Sound like a big liability in England there if they hit someone.

I always make sure all pedestrians cross the road before I turned. One day I went to turn out of my parking lot at work and another car turned into my lane as well the same spot and when I turned I noticed a pedestrian right in front of my car that came out of no where because he wasn't there when I went to go turn..So I waited and he wasnt going to cross so I started to move my car and then he started walking in front me and I slam on breaks again and then he walks away. Its like are you gonna go or not? Some pedestrians though don't pay attention to oncoming vehicles and just walk out into traffic thinking they can beat the car coming at you. Sometimes it doesn't work that way!
