Sweets for kids

I was at my Dentist for my check up and we got to discussing sweets for young children. The lady who cleans my teeth said that dry fruit is the worse thing for children to eat, it's very sticky and gets wedged between the teeth causing many cavities. It's much worse than candy. Because candy dissolves much more quickly. Just thought this old Grandma should pass this on. Blessings

i could agree with you that dry foods are more sticky to the teeth and may cause cavities. but still, gargle is the best prevention when toothbrush is not available at the time.

Here we get all kinds of dry fruit. Apples, raisens, cranberry, and prunes are just some of them. Maybe they don't dry fruit where you live.

It's dry fruit not dry food that causes the problems.

Hi Savypat, I never had a filling until I was `17 and always ate sweets as a childbut my son who is only 6 has already had two and the dentist told me it is because he eats too much fruit. Huggles. Ellie :D

Hi pat, You are much worried about your grandchildren. This is very natural for grandmas. However I had idea that candy and chocolate are worse for the teeth of the children. Now you are saying dry food. I think after eating any food kids mouth should be washed well to protect from cavity of teeth. Parents, especially mothers should watch their kids whether they are eating much sweets or dry fruits.

It's dry fruit like raisens, they get stuck between the teeth and are hard to get rid of even with brushing. Since they are very high in sugars they cause problems. Much more than candy which desolves much more quickly. I don't think dried food is a problem.

That is very interesting! I had no idea. I would have chosen the dried fruits over candy anyday. I even have dried fruits sometimes myself. Thanks for the info.

I don't think it's as big a problem for adults, they drink things more often and most of the time their teeth have more space around them. I think it's the drinking that helps us the most, especially if it's a hot drink.

Its news to me. My son has cavities, that's because he has lots of sweets and chocolates. I give my kids dry fruits occasionally and they have lots of fruits too. But my doc didn't restrict on anything, he simply said to brush after every eating......

Some kids just seem to be more prone toward cavities no matter what they eat.

I heard about that when I was raising my sons, who are now 21 and 22. They didn't know what candy was till they started kindergarten! School really ruined their diet, even though I fed them well. The one exception was their lunches, which I packed for them and kids would try to trade with them but they would not do it. While the other kids ate school lunches catered by Taco Bell and McDonald's my sons had healthy sandwiches, fruit, warm vegetables and water. I'm sure they occasionally traded with others but the times I snuck in and spied on them they didn't. Too bad about the fruit but it certainly does have a lot of sugar in it. At least it's natural and healthy sugar, even though bad for the teeth.
