Are you your own ultimate authority?

To a certain degree, we must rely on other people's accounts of reality to inform us of the nature of the universe. For example, we can't all be Astronomers, but we can all benefit from their findings. In the same way, we often look to teachers, various leaders, and others to tell us about the the realm of spirit. While this input from experts is valuable, our own sense of the truth is ultimately the most important piece in processing the information we take in from external sources. In the end, we are the authorities in our own lives, and we have the final say on whether something generally held as true is true for us. We need only take a brief look at history to remember that the religious, scientific, and political establishments that ruled the day were all wrong about something at some point in time. This is the beauty of learning, experiencing, and evolving. While we sometimes wish we could just let someone else decide for us what is real and true, this is not a viable option. The good news in all this is that we can confidently devote ourselves to making up our own minds about reality, taking everything that is handed to us as truth with a grain of salt. This does not mean that we have to discount all the information we receive from outside sources. It simply means that we must be vigilant enough to question it before we decide whether or not we agree with it. All the information we receive is useful in the process of helping us make up our own minds. As we allow ourselves to sit with the things we learn, measuring them alongside our own inner sense of the truth and our own experiences, we find that making up our minds is a process that helps us grow into stronger, smarter, more engaged human beings. Who decides for you?

Hi Pose: i agree with you. For me this is just simple. We can not afford that someone else thinks for ourselves. We have always to ask ourselves why and look for the truth. I have chosen the Catholic Church as a religion because I beleive in Christ and its worst. Sometimes I disagree with the things that some people of my religion do or the way some Catholic acts and that's ok because I am rational I don't have to ask people in what to beleive. We're her to find our own answers. Thanks for asking us this important and interesting question. Have a nice day. ALVARO.

God is my ultimate authority when it comes to living my life. I try to be a good person as much as I can and follow the teachings of Jesus. My faith is what keeps me going in this crazy world of ours, and when it comes to my past experiences and of course the events that happened to all of us, i take these as learning experiences that help me become a better person. I guess i believe that the world will eventually become a better place to live in if we all try to be the best and humane person we can be...

Hi evepin, Thank you for sharing your thoughts and following the teachings of Jesus is good as long as you agree with them. I happen to think that his teachings are among the best the world has ever seen. I think that we should consider the opinions of others as well as what is written in the Bible and others books but eventually we must go within and decide what we can and cannot accept. We must also continue to question and to learn new things. We must never stop learning and growing otherwise our life here would be pointless. Blessings.

He is one of the five greatest teachers in history, with the likes of Lao Tze, Buddha, Confucius, Mohammad and himself. All of them are the greatest teachers that spread teachings to the "improvement" of man's life and his decisions in life..They are all human and has learned from their master also but they are the ones who spread that teachings..

Many of us are inspired by Jesus. Once they're inspired they tend to follow that person bad or good and eventually call this person as God.Like the North Koreans who see Kim Il Sung and Kim jong-il as their gods. But whose choice is it to follow their footsteps and teachings? It's us. One friend of mine said that if God is an idea created by man to put order in things then i would gladly uphold to that idea if this idea keeps me from hurting other people and myself and maintain real peace and order in the world. It all goes down to FREEWILL which is supposed to be given by God. And this freewill is giving us the ultimate authority of ourselves over God's. The Bible, the priests, preachers and our parents tell us what to do with our lives. They are our light or guide but it is still our choice which follow to choose.

Very thought provoking discussion pose. There is no denying that we must to some extent rely on the findings of others to form some sort of idea of 'reality'. It seems to me that the longer I live, the more I realize how little I know. One thing is clear, though, at least to me, that there is such a thing as ultimate truth. Perhaps I should phrase that more accurately. There are certain truths that apply to all mankind. To take an extreme example, it can't be good and also bad to take another human life. Its either one or the other. Not both. Is it such a stretch of sense, to expect that all humans, male or female, old or young, rich or poor, living in any time period you wish to name, all would appreciate living in comfortable surroundings with their loved ones in peace and harmony? No one would reasonably argue that is untrue. That is also the case with many moral issues. Morality, these days, seems to be up for debate, as if it simply depends on one's perspective whether something is right or wrong. This burning question has pervaded man's history all through the ages and started with our first parents. They chose to decide for themselves what was "good" and what was to be considered "bad". They thought it would bring true freedom. Anyone can decide for themselves what the outcome of that decision has been. True freedom cannot be had without reference to the rights of others. True freedom can only be had by self rule. Self rule guided by universally accepted principles set by someone who knows intimately why some things are good to do and some things not good. Principles that apply in every time period to every person who has ever lived or will ever live. The two greatest commandments are "you must love God with your whole heart, mind, soul and strength and love your neighbour as yourself.Luke 10:27

Hi sulynsi, Thank you for your well thought out response. Somehow I missed this and some other comments earlier and I must apologize for being so late. I have not been as active here recently due to other commitments. Your statement that the longer I live the more I realize how little I know, is also true of me as I'm sure it is of all thinkers. I agree that it appears to be true that there has to be certain truths that apply to all mankind as we understand things in the physical. I think that the golden rule encompasses all of that nicely. No doubt it's true that all mankind would like to live in comfortable surroundings and in peace and harmony with their loved ones, but would such an existence offer any opportunity for growth? If by our first parents, you are referring to Adam and Eve, in the Biblical creation story, without their choosing as they did, things would never have changed and there would still just be two people living in complete innocence. As we understand things at the moment, I feel that we must listen to other opinions but make our own decisions by going within. All answers must come from within and not outside of ourselves. Jesus Christ said,"the kingdom God is within you". Blessings.

OUTSTANDING RESPONSE! I see you too are a student of history and watch some of the same programs I do. I once had a History professor who use to say,"What has happened in the past is the predictor of the future". Yes we humans have the ability to "think for ourselves" but I fear there are, shall we say mechanisums(sp?) in place that may directly or indirectly affect mankind's thinking and reasoning abilities. What do you feel?

I make my own decisions right or wrong and try to learn from both equally. To me it's a natural order of life for we humans. Unfortunately we get taken in by the "HYPE" of a situation and react rather than think it through. Governments, Madison Ave. and others prey on that. In answer to your question I would have to say generally speaking we are actually "allowed to think we are in control of our decision making. The reality I fear is something else. What do you think?

Hi bigal, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. As human beings, many would agree with you that we are "allowed to think that we are in control of our decision making", but we are not the physical. We are spiritual beings and as such are, or so I believe,in complete control. Will we ever reach that understanding while in our present form? That is something that remains to be seen but may happen as more and more people come to realize our spiritual heritage. I appreciate hearing all opinions but ultimately my decisions come from going within and to the still small voice which comes only from the silence. Blessings.

Well since you put it that way, of course I'm the one deciding for me. Haha.. But for real I do agree with your point of view. It all boils down to us whether if we want to accept the theory of all the things around us. However there is a downside of all this though. Because humans have been in the research for so long, that latter generations just keep on accepting the theory of the ones before hence killing the means to actually provide a space for self development towards the theories. So that is why there are times things that sound absurd are still accepted just as they are.

Hi ohiocy, Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I could never just accept the word of another, I did as a child but not as an adult and especially at the stage where I find myself now. I like to dicuss things with others and get their opinions but my answers come from within. Blessings.

We should be the ultimate authority of our life. Most people would think that their life has been already planned and that their purpose is just to follow that plan. Poor people, seems like a dog following his master on a leash. I mean, we make our own decisions and choices in life. Every thing we do is all about choices, that is the permanent thing in life. If we are not the sole authority of our life and that every thing was already planned, then we can just sit back and relax for it was already planned that our life should be like that. So, stop wasting your time listening to others to tell you what to do, make your own decisions and be ready for the consequences. In the end, you have no one to blame but yourself, instead of pointing finger on someone for what had happen. Every thing that has happened, we always learn something from it. Life is a continuing process of learning.. Live life, it is beautiful.. Be You!

Hi TheIceman, Thank you for your response and we agree. Far too many people let others decide for them. The best example is probably in religion where many hang on to every word spoken from the pulpit beleving it without question. Many who claim to be Christians never read the Bible for themselves but trust their priest or pastor to tell them what's written there. To a lesser extent, it's also true of politics where generations from one family always vote for the same party. You are right we are here to live life and to be happy. Blessings.

I agree with both of you. People ask others to decide for themselves in a form of advice so when they fail doing it, they have somebody to put blame on. One co-worker asked me if I pray the rosary and memorized The Creed, I said no, then she told me, "How dare you!" She prays it everyday but cusses all the time. Anyway, people might tell us what to do but they cannot Dictate us nor judge us with our choices.

Is important to learn from others ,but at the end we need to assess the situation ,and decide what makes sense to us. Radicals can cause a great deal of damage to society whether it comes from the right or from the left.

Listen to the advice of others but walk your own path. Until you know for yourself, is the lesson really learned?? We must be brave enough to stand on our own two feet. Free ourselves from the will of others. Question, search, and discover for ourselves, always being open for the expanding possibilities. There is ALWAYS more to learm. To question is the start on the path to discovery. Always question, even long held beliefs. It WILL ALL ADD UP!!!! Everything does.......nice discussion.

Hi bird, Thank you for sharing your thoughts here and we agree completely. We must keep on learning, the moment we think we have arrived we are in trouble. I must admit that it took me a long time to break completely free from some long held beliefs but now I know that the answer lies within. Christ said, "the kingdom of heaven is within you" and the Bible also says, "be still and know that I am God". We can learn much from others but we alone make it our beliefs if only until we are given more light. Blessings.
