How ill does your child have to be for you to take them to the doctor?

My 3 year old daughter has recently recovered from a stomach bug, which she has passed on to her 1 year old brother. The symptoms are slightly worse in him, but as he is still drinking fluids and is alert I feel that we should just let the illness run it's course. My partner however, wants to take him to see a doctor. As it's now the weekend our doctor's surgery is closed, meaning we would need to take him to the out of hours service at the hospital. This seems a bit extreme for me considering he has the same bug his sister had and she is now fine after a couple of days. We have agreed to keep an eye on him and should he worsen seek medical help, or if he is not better by monday then I will phone our doctor. It just got me wondering though, to you parents out here, when do you take your child to the doctors? The slightest sniffle, or do any of you regret not taking your child to the doctor sooner? Thanks.

i'm very paranoid when it comes to my child, so when her fever hits more than 38.5 C then i take her to the ER. if she has a cold and cough for 2-3 days then i take her to her pedia too. But i really dont take chances when it comes to my daughter. we have a healthcard anyways so i maximize using it too. cheers and happy mylotting!

Hey, I'm not sure what a healthcard is, I'm guessing it's some form of medical insurance?? All our healthcare is free in the uk so that wouldn't be a problem. If I thought there was something really wrong with them then I would take them to the ER, but they aren't very nice places at the weekend. He's much better today, so I doubt we'll even need to see our own doctor on Monday. I only asked this as me and my partner had different views on what we should do, and it looks like it's the same on here too. Like a previous poster said though, you just know when they have to go to hospital. Thanks for your reply :D

if my daughter is sick with something that she has had for more than 3-4 days (both our daughters are teens); if she has a high fever, that sort of thing.

With a stomach bug i would take them to my gp if they were still vomiting after 48 hours (as much as they might still be drinking they could get dehydrated) but if they could not keep anything down i would take them probably after about 12 hours. Regarding other things, colds theyare left to run their course altho youngest has glue ear so a slight cold can make her very sick but I know the signs and if i feel it has spread to her ears i take her to gps. If they have a temp i take them straight away if it is 39 or above as this is very dangerous if 38 i jist keep an eye on them and try to work out whats causing it, i guess its all relative like you just know dont you when your child is sick enough to see a doc xxx

I have been fairly lucky that my children don't take sick that often, and when they do I just watch them closely for fever or them just acting lethargic. Either of those, acting lethargic or a high fever and I will take them to the dr or emergency room. Otherwise I just watch them.

I would definetly take your child to the doctor. If my child is sick I don't wait around. Especially if he has a cough, fever or feeling really frail. I want the best for my child and want him to be in good health. So when ever he is sick I don't take any chances especially if theirs something going around such as a bad flu. It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your child.
