Is Dungeons & Dragons Satanic?

Frankly, I'm astonished this question is still coming up. I was under the impression 1980 was nearly 30 years ago, and that was when this particular mania was at its peak. Surely we've got better, more modern targets to aim for nowadays than a paper-based game from the 1970s. In the digital age, surely ignorant people should be accusing things like World of Warcraft of being satanic? Go have a look, it's got demons aplenty. It's equally odd because usually, these particular kinds of condemnations tend to run their course over a few years. I don't think anyone's particularly bothered about the Harry Potter series being satanic anymore, and the Golden Compass hysteria seems to have died down since the movie. Before Dungeons and Dragons, it was heavy metal, and rock and roll prior to that. Not to mention the brief flirtation America had with banning alcohol. There's a long, long tradition of condemning things which other people might enjoy in Christian history, up to and including celebrating Christmas at one time or another. It seens not the rpg but the animation for kids was shut down because of this. The bad guy looked like the devil and things they said and how the carachters looked like was like a bad influence so the association of parents made it stop to be on tv in the 80's. That was unfortunate cause I always hated animations even when I was a child and that was the only one... Now I know the end, did you know that the writer actually put the last chapter online? You can download it in pdf, it was preatty surprising for me! For everyone who wants to talk about Dungeons & Dragons, add me, I love this stuff!

They did? Wow, I'm behind on the times. ~L~ I agree with you though, there weren't very many animations when I was young that I liked. Now I'm an adult and I've gotten into Japanimations. ~L~ Go figure. ;) Anyhow, I'll have to check out that last chapter.

I wish this question would go away as well, but there is always some branch of Christianity trying to get attention by bringing stuff like this up. It is more common now to hear video games are the new satanic pleasure, but D&D seems to always get brought up. It is possible to play a VERY Christian version of D&D, focusing on a Cleric-only magic campaign set during the Crusades. Otherwise all the extreme right religious fanatics look at all the magic as too close to promoting witchcraft which they cannot disassociate from Satan worship. At least when they are attacking D&D they are leaving the innocent Wiccans alone for a second!

People will always find something to complain about, and something to point a finger at "This, look at this! This is what is causing all the world's problems!" It's ignorance and foolishness. But, I'm not a very religious person. ;) In fact, I don't like any book written hundreds of years ago by several different people determining how I should live my live. Especially when it has a bad habit of condeming people to "Hell" when those people have done nothing that would warrant such a punishment. But, its all in the translation, isn't it? Anyhow, I know this post is old, but yes, I still hear how "evil" Dungeons and Dragons is supposed to be, I normally just back away slowly and then high-tail it away from the person ... simply put, they aren't someone I care to share the same air with.
