School Security Checks

Well, it's that time of the year again, all the kids are getting out of school! I wanted to focus this discussion on the subject of school security checks. My sister is in middle school, and they are forcing all the kids not to bring any sorts of items to school for the last days of school. It just so happens that my sister decides to bring a lunchbox with her, which is still allowed. The school set up a check in at the front of the school to check everyone as soon as they came in the doors. This is the part that gets me; the staff checked her lunchbox looking for any objects that weren't supposed to be brought to school. AKA sharpies. So my question to you is: Do school authorities have the right to go through a child's lunchbox looking for sharpies?

I would have thought that teachers would only do this if they thought it was really necessary. There must have been some sort of threat. Teachers don't do this for fun. I also think that it is there job to protect the children. If they believe there is a threat then they must act on it. If your parents think that this has gone too far then they should contact the school for an explanation. If they are not happy then they should take it to higher authorities.

I just think that the school has taking it a little too far to search that deeply. I understand where they are coming from though, i wouldn't want sharpie markers written all over the school. I just thought that it was a little bit too extreme to go to that extent. It's not like the school isn't situated in a bad neighborhood, in fact, her school is one of the best middle schools in town.
