Just what is a discussion?

Now before you head for the exclamation mark, I have searched 'What is a discussion' and nothing came up so that part should be alright! Let me check am I advertising something? No, so that's OK!! Is this a quiz, a joke, a poll, a milestone, a recipe ? Nope - good, maybe I can carry on then. Do you think that it is actually a real posibility to hold a good discussion under the topic 'myLot'. When you look through the topics 'myLot' seems to be one of the most common topics chosen by members. I have though seen some very long discussions on this topic, some very interesting discussions but some to be honest consisting of a dozen replies all axactly the same. So what DOES constitute a discussion? My thoughts are that a discussion should be as original as possible, it should make you think, it should make you want to respond, hopefully ( depending of course on the subject)entertaining,it should have easy to follow writing. Am I wrong with these thoughts or is this what you think ?

hi oldchem some fool put a tag guideline violation a nd I think this is a valid discussion not breaking any thing. I also agree with your assessment of what a discussion should be, and right it should be originial and not ask questions that mylot questions and answers 'already cover. so many I do not respond to as they will be deleted.

A discussion here in mylot is when you really have a talk to talk discussion on a topic. I believe you can start a discussion and see who replies to the topic you have started and then to have a discussion you would have to keep talking back and forth to some people on the topic. You might only talk back once or twice to the person, but you are having a discussion on some type of topic of course. You can not have a discussion if you don't talk back to someone.

I agree. A discussion is not just a question. A discussion is something that can be debated or talked about. Not just given an answer too. The best discussions here are the ones that make other members think. That's what I strive to do with my discussions.

I think our's motivation on mylot are looking additional income, not intention to deepen our's knowledge. So very naturally, the topic of discussion has made not necessarily get maximum results. And, I think, you don't have to think too much hope that the answers will like your hope. Once more, I believe, we only discuss in a relaxed

LOL! I like how you obviously read the guidelines and went through the checklist one by one and verified each one before you started this ... and you let us in on the process, too. I think that a discussion makes you think and want to respond. Then hopefully the original poster of said discussion is interested in the topic enough (which presumably they are, since they are the ones that started it) to respond back to you in a meaningful way. This gives you the opportunity for back and forth interaction and perhaps a debate (but not necessarily), which would be a discussion. You also have the opportunity to interact with other members on the discussion, so there can be many mini discussions within one larger one. Of course, that is just my take on the subject, but it does seem similar to yours.

Well, I am sorry that you have been having problems recently, Oldchem. I am not aware of them, but it seems that others are (hi Rich and Mario!). I do like the way that you approached this, though, and I do not see any violations, although that does not necessarily mean that they do not exist since I am definitely not an expert.

violated is such a strong word... maybe 'bent' is more appropriate sometimes

well, this discussion that you started is a nice example of a good discussion i've seen a lot of attempts at coming up with 'good discussions' by other myLotters, but a lot of them fall far from being a good discussion in my books. so when i come across any 'discussions' like that, it just say my piece and have fun where it's possible. but when i find one of those rare gems of a discussion, i feel so satisfied when posting & answering comments and questions

A discussion is something that is talked about, debated, spoken about, written about or explained. I can't take credit for that really cool definition, I actually looked it up in a dictionary.
