Cocker spaniel grooming styles

My beautiful chocolate 8 month old cocker, "Ollie" has a very lush thick coat. He is currently cut in a standard (?) style with a very short head and saddle and very furry legs and underside. My problem is that I am alergic to dog hair. I have always cut my two previous cockers in a length similar to that of a Lab. It really cuts down on the dander but does not look very "cockery". Does anyone have any suggestions on how I might have my boy clipped closer but still maintain his cocker good looks? Any wisdom and suggestions are much appreciated.
