I had a craving for shrimp yesterday

I had to go to the store anyway so I went to the meat/seafood department and looked at the shrimp. In the meatcase there were peeled, cooked and deveined shrimp on sale for $4.99 a pound but they didn't look good. I was pleased the price hadn't skyrocketed because of the Gulf tragedy. I went to the frozen and saw that a pound of frozen shrimp was $10.99, up from $5.99 the week before!
The shocking thing is, the shrimp was from China! Well, I never buy anything from there if I can help it because of all the pollution and conditions things are grown in but why would they raise foreign shrimp so much? They must be trying to get a larger markup and hoping people won't read the label and know it's not from the States. That's deceptive and dishonest, in my opinion.
What do you think? Has seafood been pricier where you are? Do you read the labels to find out where your seafood and meat are coming from?

I always read the labs and I do not purchased and foodstuffs from China, not even for my dogs. I this it is a disgrace to gouge the prices to scan the shoppers into think the shrimp is from the States.

Shoppers are lazy. They do not bother to look and see where the product is from. Even if they did, China is now sending product to the U.S. and having companies pack them for them so the label can say packaged in the U.S. and conveniently leave off the product is from China. At least that's what I hear.
I read everything! My health is too important not to, as is my dogs' and as was my family's when we were all together. My adult sons read labels, too, as they remember me reading them all their lives.

Hi, it's quite shocking that seafood cost over your side doubled. For me, frozen seafood or fresh ones are pretty much the same price, going at $1~$3/100g. I don't foresee any increase in price any sooner or else everyone will just boycott seafood for meat instead. I don't look at the seafood origins though and thus, I have no idea where they are from.

I'm quite sure the prices have risen because of the disaster of the oil spill. But since this shrimp comes from China I don't see why it should be increased unless there is a shortage of it there that I haven't heard about.
