Catching Mice...!!

Fancy Mice who like to escape! - Any ideas of how to prevent escape AND how to catch them should they get out!!!

I have two pet mice- we have a mouse cage (a special cage with smaller bars to stop them sqeezing through- apparently...) but yesterday they knocked their cage off a table overnight and escaped. Luckily one of them came wandering out quite easily and we caught him very quickly. The other one was harder to find, we knew where he was, but the problem was, where he had gotten himself was in the wall cavity!!!! After 3 hours, and a lot of destruction of the house pulling things apart, we got him and put him back in the cage. We put them back in their normal place which is our bedroom and left them to it. They had never escaped before, and the only reason they had gotten out this time was because the cage had fallen apart when it fell... BUT on going to bed, a mouse ran out from under my bed...one of my pet mice!!!! I grabbed him and put him back in the cage and then quickly found his friend who had also gotten out! I put their cage into a cardboard box and put the box in the bath! Thinking there was NO WAY they could get out of the cage then out of the box AND out of the bath, at most i expected to come down and find them in the bath (no water of course!), but again this mornign I came down and found a mouse running around the floor of the bathroom (luckily I had filled up any holes around the bath with newspaper so there wasn't really anywhere for them to go. And again I caught him very quickly- the other hadn't gotten out. What I want to ask is does anybody have any ideas of 1) how to keep them in their cage!!! I have no idea where they are escaping from! The cage must have gotten damaged in the fall yesterday somehow and they can now sqeeze through the cage bars. and 2) if they DO escape again...which is very likely!!! How do I catch them!? yesterday I was VERY lucky to find the one who got into the wall. I didn't think we would find him as we once lost a hamster who got into the walls in our old home and he never reappeared. Any ideas anyone!!!!

Could you not get some of those boxes that are used to catch mice humanly, think you put cheese in them or something.

Yeah I have heard of these!!! I am not so sure they'd work, they seem way too clever for them!!!! We tried putting the mouses house next to the hole we knew he was in, but he would scoot out, smell it and then dart again rather than getting in it like he does in his cage!!! It's like he knew we'd catch him!!! lol!! We're going to try getting a different type of cage- a fish tank type, see if that helps!!!

I thought that but don't know if it would be big enough, tey seem to have stayed in there the last few days!!! We have bought some wire mesh to put around the cage and clip on so they can't get out!!! Pains in the bum they are, Ill stick with guinea pigs in future I think!

We have had pet rats and hamsters and they have escaped too. I suggest you watch them in their cage and see if you can find a weak spot where they are squeezing through, then you can see if you can fix it or you might need to buy a new cage, maybe one with smaller gaps between the bars or something. We had a hamster that escaped once and lived behind a bookcase. She had chewed up the carpet to make a nest and used to walk to the rats' cage in the next room and take the food they had thrown out of their cage!!

Awwww thats cute!!!! We had a hamster who escaped and we sadly never found him, he was quite old, so we wonder if he ran away to die. They seem to have stayed in there the last few nights, but I can see them trying to find a weak spot, as it is a mouse cage with tiny gaps between bars it should be impossible for them to get out, but thats rubbish lol. The onyl other type of cage I can get is a vivarium type which I am trying to find which doesn't cost a fortune!!! :)

We kept our rats in a tank once but were told it's no good for them, as there isn't enough ventilation. Apparently in a tank, the moisture can cause problems for their breathing. I don't know if a vivarium is better?
