I've been wondering what is better...to turn the computer off at night, or leave it on all the time. Some say it uses more power to turn it on than to let it on all the time. Since I try to converve whatever whenever possible, this is really important to me. I would really appreciate your responses and thoughts.

the thing you mentioned that "It uses more power to turn it on than to let it on all the time " is totally wrong. there is nothing like that. if you don't have any work or any task running on the computer then why keep it on. if there are downloads , or processes running on the computer then its ok , because they are important but keeping the computer on just for no use is simply foolishness . save electricity , save environment , save earth.no hard feelings.

Of course...no hard feelings. I asked for opinions. However, I was stating that I was told it took more power to turn it off and on than to leave it on. I was hoping someine would know it this was true. Thanks for your response.

Oh , man I got stunned when the pther guy said that his PC remained on for a yea . I think the PC will surely die due to over heating . WHikle coming to the topic . I do regularly shutdown my PC . It eventually keeps our PC safe and also saves our electricity bill which great . I also request everyone to shut down their PC's to save electricity . This can save lot of energy .

I really don't think leaving a computer on all the time will cause it to "die". My concern is the energy useage. Some say it costs more to restqart than to leave it on. I am trying to find out which is best on energy use. What will cause it to overheat is not keeping it clean. You need to regularly clean the vents and fans to keep you computer in good working order.

I leave my computer on sleep mode, its like on but not on. I have a mac, so many mac users don't shut down their macs because Mac are very good at sleeping ;-) Yes you can never shut down your mac and its will run very smooth. No restart or shut down needed.

Thank you for your reply. My laptop is not a problem...I really don't use it that often, and always shut it down when I am done.
